About Phantasy Series Reference Opus

NOTE: This currently consists only of the first chapter of the game (about 2 hours of gameplay, less if you enable cheats (yes you can enable cheats), more if you stop and smell the roses). The game will be released episodically. Also, check the content warnings.

Welcome to the world of Phantasy Series Reference Opus (PSRO), a game hopefully with the feel of an early 90's RPG. Guide Zemi as she progresses through life, and determine how she handles its vicissitudes.

Features:
  • Unleash powerful combo attacks!
  • Explore!
  • Party!
  • Squirrel(s)!
  • Squirrel minigame!
  • More references than you can count! (well, more than I can count)
  • Exploit "glitches"!
Future plans:
  • Release the rest of the chapters. Not gonna lie, it's going to take a long time, got a full time job and a buncha kids.
  • Implement new mini games/subsystems with every chapter. Fishing, "monster" breeding, etc.
  • Maybe get custom sound effects (right now they all come from freesound.org).

There is a lot of heart put into this. It only lasts a couple hours but it's worth it to anyone that grew up playing genesis rpgs. So much detail was put into it. Almost every item in the world can be checked and you will get a description. All the characters are well developed and I actually started to care what happened to them. The music was really well done as well. Loved all the 90s lines thrown in as well. I really hope the developer makes the next chapter. It would be a shame for it to be abandoned. I would pay for the next chapter, I enjoyed it that much.

Reference Opus indeed lol. There's plenty of them everywhere you look. A lovely indie RPG with beautiful music, great pixel art, and classic Phantasy Star IV-style gameplay. The Pech minigame was a fun break from the action. I finished Chapter 0 and am eagerly awaiting any future updates!

Solid ode to Phantasy Star 4! I loved that game growing up and it was my favorite of the Phantasy Star series with great graphics and music and an awesome battle interface. This dev did a solid job and I hope he can continue because this is a teaser.

A fun experience so far. The inspiration is clear and well implemented in many cases. I look forward to future updates.

Just Incomplete thats all. Glitchy game crashes under certain circumstances like slimes merging. Which if it auto saved wouldn't be an issue. End fight is very confusing with all sorts of unexplained glitchy behavior. Feel like a prelude to an actual game. Story just gets started when the game ends. You have barely left the first town just the wilds outside it and a dungeon. There is one weird minigame thats pretty hard to control feels more like final fantasy 7 the phantasy star in that sense. only one character has a skin as far as i can tell and its from the hard to control mini game. I got what I paid for though lol.
