About Playing History: Vikings

Playing History is a whole new (fun and engaging) way to learn history
Target audience: 8-14 years old.

Navigating Erik in his journey from cradle, youth and eventual grave; you experience his journey towards becoming a true Viking within an interactive environment. It is times of change as the old beliefs are challenged by a new God and trade routes mean contact with people from strange lands. The game focuses on civilized trading as well as the faith and brutality of the viking era; a time when Christianity arrived in the North and became the dominant faith.

You cannot change history, but you can make a difference by becoming chieftain; Will you take your rightful place - or will you fade into the abyss of history?

Took a monastery — turned out it had coffee and Wi-Fi. Vikings now tweet about mead and seas. History? No, it’s a beer-fueled comedy.

Without settings, without screen rotation, in essence, you're stuck if you want to go back, and you need to tap every time you want to move, not like a hold-to-move function.

In this "game" you walk from the beach to the monastery. You pick up coins by, you guessed it, touching them with the cursor. Then you have to do what might be the worst stealth section of all time. I died on purpose, i Alt+Tabbed to put on some music and the game crashed. I admire their dedication to making unplayable games. 1/10 PS: No options menu at all and the cursor turns black for the very dark stealth section. Lol.

I've now played all 3 "Playing History" games from Serious Games Interactive. The Plague game was great, the slave trade game was bad but this one was actually alright. Now, this is a children's educational game so my review won't be too harsh and i'm trying to imagine what I'd have thought playing as a ten year old. It's evident that the budget wasn't big; the voice acting was, simply put, terrible and cut up into parts ruining the flow of the dialogue. My only guess is that the studio did the voice acting themselves. The art style does share similarities with the older games which I appreciate but it has a very cheap look. The controls are a little clunky and I can imagine the fighting mini games being a little frustrating for small children. But does these things matter? No, of course not because it's a educational children's game. I'd have LOVED this game as a child especially because you can easily miss stuff if you're not thorough on your first playthrough. And the stealth sections are actually decent too.
