About qomp2

Control a Pong ball aching to break free of its life stuck between two paddles. Explore a dangerous, minimalist world, armed with simple two button controls: tap a button to change direction diagonally by 45 degrees, and hold down a button to unleash a cathartic dash forward. That’s all you need to solve environmental puzzles and labyrinthine levels. Around each corner is a new challenge that will test your two-button and problem-solving skills. A variety of difficult enemies and bosses help you mark your time as you navigate through 30 levels spread across four worlds.

qomp2 effectively captures the essence of the original 1972 Pong and its spiritual successor, the 2021 experimental indie title qomp.

Key Features:

  • Cerebral Puzzling: The simple, two button controls belie complex and compelling gameplay. Use your reflexes and think ahead to avoid hazards, flip switches, and bounce your way through 30 tricky levels. Hidden collectibles push you to explore every inch of the minimalist maps.
  • A Surprise around Every Corner: qomp2 constantly delights as new features, mechanics, enemies, traps and hazards are introduced as you progress deeper into the game. Don’t get complacent: As soon as you’ve mastered one aspect of gameplay, another is ready to challenge you.
  • Bosses: Four challenging bosses block your path at the end of each world. You will need to use all your newfound skills to master their attacks and defenses. Don’t worry. Death isn’t the end in an arcade-inspired world. Quick respawn makes sure you’re back in the action in seconds.
  • A Serene Soundscape: A soundtrack of ambient jams gets you in the groove, and helps you keep your cool, as you work your way through the minimalist maze.
  • An Emotional Journey: An enigmatic story of doubt, fear, and self-acceptance, told wordlessly through simple effects and gameplay.

Qomp2 is a bit of a middle ground for me because while it's certainly an interesting game in the way it plays, it's also a bit too long for what it offers. There's 30 levels, but there's really about only 15 levels worth of ideas going on. A big disappointment is that early in the game you get a "blue" power-up, and this might lead you into the expectation that surely there will be more, but there aren't. Instead ideas are slowly trickled in and then reused throughout the game which makes it end up being a drag. It also has a habit of having rooms in levels that are completely empty and just serve as hallways to the next segment, which makes it feel really slow to play. The way the visuals stay completely dull the whole time also doesn't really help. There's also a bit of bugs in the game that drag it down a good deal. The snake gimmick will sometimes cause you to just die multiple times when you respawn somehow. I find that wall collisions are also a big mess, probably do to your puck being round I imagine. The visual effects really make the screen tear apart as well, you can atleast turn them off but then the game loses the aesthetic it was going for. Lastly, probably the…

Look, I normally don't go full "hour to playtime ratio", but I got 30 levels, most of which were rather short, for $20. That's less levels than Super Mario Bros. 1! Plus the stupid hints you can't turn off, seriously, why?! I do like the chill music and the art, but it's similar in qomp 1, so really just go play that instead.

This game takes the first game and makes it so much more interesting and engaging! The simple addition of the charge boost move opens up options for gameplay that make this game infinetely better than the first. Fun puzzler!

The game is fine for the most part, but I think this is a pretty disappointing sequel. It just doesn't do enough new stuff to make it that interesting. The asking price is also way too high.
