Rabby in the Land of Sweets is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a really poorly made, janky platformer, once you look past the cutesy rabbits and sweets veneer. It's an unpleasant and badly designed mess. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. There's no English translation for the game, but that's okay. The language of bad games is universal. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. Rabby in the Land of Sweets is a cheerful 2D side-scrolling platformer that combines an old-school arcade sensibility with a colorful world built around candy, cake, and other sugary imagery. Developed and published by TOKYO COOL JAPAN, the game keeps its ambitions deliberately modest, concentrating on responsive platforming, enemy stomping, score chasing, and straightforward progression. Rather than overwhelming the player with complicated systems, it attempts to make a familiar style of platforming more engaging through precise timing and incentives for improving performance. The adventure follows Rabby, a sugar-candy rabbit whose peaceful existence is disrupted when the heroine is kidnapped. Rabby sets out on a rescue mission that eventually leads toward a mountain made of cake, with various enemies standing in the way.
