Rainbow Billy wins players over with its charming art style, wholesome messaging about empathy and kindness, and creative turn-based system where you befriend troubled characters instead of fighting them. The game delivers genuine emotional moments and a good amount of content with its Paper Mario-inspired exploration and character interactions. Some players mention minor issues like occasional animation gaps and suggest there's room for polish, but these don't significantly diminish the overall heartfelt experience.
An interesting turn-based game with a story around exploring your own emotions and emotions of others. It gets a bit twee at times, but that's to be expected of a game with an art style like that. The thing that made me interested was the combat system - yes, it's quite simple, but the fact that no fight (or confrontation, as the game calls it) is a filler trash fight is quite commendable. Every fight in the game is against a predetermined opponent with dialogue you have to navigate and think about if you want to "help them" by winning the fight. And not only that, but almost every fight brings in some sort of twist on the base combat formula, adding one-off mechanics never seen again in the entirety of the game. It's clever and it kept me entertained enough to continue interacting with the combat system that is basically 'put square peg into a square hole'.1 found this helpful
Good early on but the amount of friends with each one being a fight filled with boring minigames just got to be too much, it would be a way better game with combat removed entirely.
Fun enough game. I set the difficulty to "normal" which was quite easy, but I think harder would have been less fun because (I'm guessing) higher difficulty would just mean you might do less damage per turn, and by the end the combat was really dragging on a bit. Too much repetition for me in that arena. The puzzles were a reasonable level, not difficult but not nothing, which is probably right for a game that's not primarily a puzzle game. The graphics and story are cute. Playing on Linux with Proton, there were a couple of glitches - an interesting one that I've never seen before, where at startup there's no sound, and then about 30 seconds after startup everything freezes for 5 seconds then the sound starts working. Usually when there's a weird startup freeze it's before the main menu. The other glitch was near the end of the game, the portal at the end of the third "core" chapter, went to a scene with just the ship in an infinite black void. It seemed like the sort of thing that might be intentional so I drove around for a while trying to trigger some exit from that scene, but eventually gave up and exited the game, then when I reloaded it came in on the actual final c…
Wholesome, funny, and cozy. Sank about 10 hrs of play time just in the first area, so decent amount of content also.
a really heartfelt game, has so much depth into common social issues in a friendly way, instead of fighting your enemies, you have to befriend them even when they hurt you because they all had issues in their lives. a game that i recommend you to play if you were a parent, a kid, a teen, and any age, it teaches that everyone has something to go through, but you don't have to face your problems alone or hide from them. definitely will drop a tear from your eyes, especially in the end credit that shows what really was in billy's life. 9/10
This game is genuinely so cute and so much fun. Please play it if you get the chance. The art style is so unique, the overworld set up is magical, the mechanics are creative. Everything about this game is great
