About Road Works

Road Works is a new take on the Strategy game genre by indie game developer TaxSoft, inspired by classic City Builder and Business Tycoon video games. You are given a set of factories and are put in charge of maximizing its profits through the construction of carefully planned road networks and making the right factory management choices.

In contrast to other tycoon games, you have no money or time restrictions. You just adjust the settings of your factories and build as many roads as you wish. When you think you are finished you compute your income using the built-in simulator function. The simulator computes the average income you are making. If your income is above the goal income, you win, otherwise you adjust your design until you reach the goal income. This means that Road Works is in a sense a puzzle game where you are on a quest to find the optimal design of a given industry.

Features:
  • Choose the optimal road type out of up to 10 different types of road in any given transportation situation.
  • Manage 33 different types of factories from farms to mechatronics by specifying attributes such as the amount of workers and workload.
  • Help evolve nearby towns by providing them with resources, allowing you to have access to a larger workforce.
  • Play through 20 campaign levels where you will have to save a struggling oil company from going bankrupt or play any of the 10 additional custom maps of varying difficulty.
  • Make your own custom maps using the Road Works Editor.
  • Enhanced gameplay with an immersive soundtrack containing over 30 minutes of blues, jazz and funk and numerous sound effects.

✦ AI summary

Road Works is a transit and business simulator that strips away traditional city-building elements, focusing instead on road construction and profit management. Players are sharply divided: some find the campaign scenarios intellectually challenging and strategically rewarding, while many others criticize the complete lack of tutorial, poor UI guidance, unintuitive road placement mechanics, and unrealistic traffic physics that make the game frustratingly opaque and difficult to learn.

Road Works looks like a city building game but really it's a simple transit/business simulator. Build roads economically and tweak settings of the surrounding businesses to turn a profit. This is a lot like Sim City without the city building components, and if that seems like a dumb idea, well, here we are. There's a few transit simulation games on Steam, and all of them are better than this. People looking for a good transit simulator (why???) would be better off looking at Cities in Motion or similar.

This feels as a student project. I couldn’t even play it because there is no tutorial and literally no way to discover yourself what are you supposed to do. You click buildings, no information really. Cars dumbly go one through another like they are ghosts, doesn’t matter one comes from one side and other in opposite direction. When placing roads you have no guidance whatsoever, sometimes you just can’t place them, god know why, Who lets this kind of games on steam? This game is outrageously bad.

After playing this game once half a year ago, becoming frustrated and abandoning it after a couple of hours, I thought my money was wasted. However, I gave this game another go and appreciated the intellect and strategy underlying its complex mechanics. The campaign scenarios are brilliantly devised and definitely challenging. Funnily enough, the earlier missions have little room for error, but as you progress, it becomes a lot more forgiving. Thumbs up and I will definitely buy RoadWorks 2.
