  • A stylised, approachable 3D environment
  • In-game photography system
  • Japanese audio
  • Photo album to store your flash-cards
  • Game modes that test your memory
  • Beginner phrases and grammar lessons
  • Day/Night and weather cycle

  • A lo-fi soundtrack perfect for studying

Create Stunning Photography Based Flash-Cards

Every photo flash-card you take will be unique to you. The idea behind this is to strengthen the relationship between a word and how you see its physical appearance. In the real world, you can then see such objects and make connections to the Japanese words you've already learned while playing Shashingo.

Track Your Progress in the Photo Album

Your photo album is where you keep your collection of photo flash-cards. If you remember them well in Find Mode, they'll be separated into the 'mastered' tab and shown with a gold star sticker. However, if you're struggling to remember a word in Find Mode, they'll be marked with a purple exclamation mark sticker, so you know which words you need to practice more.

Learn from Lessons In-Game

At the back of your photo album, there are also numerous pages of Japanese lessons designed for beginners that will teach you how to speak Japanese and use the vocabulary that you learn in Shashingo. Also included are some key words and important phrases that can help you in your future conversations.

The game is really cute and well made. I bought it with the safe expectation that there is more than one environment to explore, for how many words can you learn on a single tiny map. Well, I had to find out it is one map. There seem to be 145 words you can photograph, each one brings another three words on a flashcard, plus 30 pages (like a book) of phrases and grammar. 580 words isn't bad, but most words are on the back of a loosely related photo, you cannot use it to learn them in a somewhat organized way. Is it cute, fun and engaging? Absolutely. Will it make a difference in your Japanese learning journey? Most probably not.

I don't feel like I'm learning anything. There are better games out there that make you feel like you are learning, like Hiragana battle. Give this one a pass

While the game is nice, and it makes learning words much more fun, the quiz part is very questionable. Why am I being quizzed on words that aren't what I took a picture of in Quiz Mode? Is there an option I'm missing? I'd like to learn to the words of the pictures first before learning more complicated things.

This game is actually super cool, theres so many features that supprised me that i wasnt expecting when i got it but where just really fun, like the text book for example, or the extra related words at the back of cards, also a tip, if there's specific words you wanna practice, add them to favourites, you can change it to quiz yourself on favourites only.

Quite a lovely game. Photography-wise it is a bit disappointing because when you get new photos of a specific thing (e.g. a cat (neko)), they replace the old ones, but otherwise the game is great. A wide variety of words to learn and a really pretty artstyle to it all.
