About The Scenic Treasures - Japanese Learning

One day, in your warehouse you happen to find a letter written in English and scrolls written in a language you are not familiar with. The letter says if you fill in the blanks in the scrolls, they will lead you to treasures and if you gather all the treasures, something magnificent will happen to the world. It seems the first treasures you are supposed to find are located in Japan and the scrolls are written in Japanese. Fortunately, you have got plenty of time, so you have decided to head for the country to gather the treasures. Now your journey will begin.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the game's engaging story and repetition-based approach to vocabulary reinforcement, finding it useful for reviewing Japanese skills if you already have foundational knowledge. However, the visual novel format severely limits its educational effectiveness as a standalone learning tool, lacking interactive feedback systems, quizzes, or progress tracking, and the inability to mute music adds to the frustration; beginners would struggle with the poorly-sequenced curriculum that throws complex grammar and vocabulary at players before mastering basic characters.

Unfortunately I can not recommend this game. For language learning, this is a bad approach since the implementation of this game is just your bog-standard visual novel engine which doesn't offer more interaction than clicking to get the next line of dialog and choosing an option from a list of choices. There is no feedback loop - as in, no way to review your progress, re-do lessons later on, quiz yourself on whether you actually learned anything. The model is fine for VNs, but not for language learning. Also, there does not seem to be an option to turn down the background music. While the music isn't bad as such, it does get annoying really quickly. It looks cute and all, and I wish it was better, but unfortunately this is not good.

This is a good way to review and brush up on your Japanese skills. If you are just starting out, you have not learn anything about Japanese, it would be good to learn about Hiragana and Katakana. The game will mention some small facts about the Japanese alphabet that you would not know right off the bat. I made a goal to find a treasure and then save the game. It's a long road in between save points. That is just me. I knew some words and learned Hiragana and Katakana prior to playing the game. I eventually came across some words that I did not yet know. As you read the text messages, you sense a bit of repetition. Repetition is good for learning. Even if you do not remember a word, you sense you heard it before. I will recommend this game for the vocabulary it challenged me with. Repetition is the clue. Remember the clue. Scenic Treasures is not a action game per say. More like flash cards with scenic backgrounds. It's interesting to look at. Bottom line, learn a little about the Japanese language before you play. The game presumes you had some lessons prior to playing. Ganbatte kudasai...
