TLDR: PROs: +++ tight controls +++ challenging gameplay: you need to be careful from the first to the last room ++ a lot of items, choice between 2 random items after each room bring interesting build decisions ++ different characters that really empower different approaches + nice music that matches the atmosphere + character quotes after each room CONs: - can be frustrating, if that is a problem for you (don't give up too fast - you'll become better soon!) - i almost alway forget to use the abilities, but that might be just me :P After reading a short blog entry of Mike Matei [1] yesterday about "small games", i checked my game list on steam which ones of the games i own matched the points made on that list... It turns out it's the games i like the most: Risk of Rain, Hotline Miami, Super Meatboy, Devil Daggers... These came to mind before i checked, but i completely forgot about Star Rogue which i played about a year ago for the first time and was only able to beat the game with two characters on medium difficulty and using the keyboard. Now i found out you can play with controller also (XBOX 360 Controller works out of the box) and that makes a big difference and a new ex…

Jump only works sometimes on the controller even after switching keybinds. After closing and relaunching, it's now glitched to the point that the sprite will barely move anytime I start a new game. It still needs work before it's in a playable state.

Title: Disappointing Journey Amongst the Stars: Star Rogue Review Star Rogue promises a thrilling adventure through the cosmos but ultimately falls short of its lofty aspirations, leaving players adrift in a sea of unfulfilled potential and frustrating design choices. As someone who embarked on this journey with high hopes, I feel compelled to share my candid assessment of this interstellar misstep. Gameplay (2/5): Star Rogue's gameplay suffers from a lack of cohesion and depth, offering little more than repetitive, uninspired shooting galleries set against procedurally generated environments. The core mechanics, while serviceable, fail to evolve or innovate beyond the initial novelty, resulting in a monotonous experience devoid of meaningful progression or strategic depth. The absence of compelling objectives or narrative drive further exacerbates the sense of aimlessness, leaving players to wander aimlessly through the void. Graphics and Sound (2.5/5): While Star Rogue's pixel art aesthetic exudes a nostalgic charm reminiscent of classic arcade shooters, it fails to capitalize on its potential to create visually stunning cosmic landscapes or dynamic space battles. The environm…
