“Bad circumstances have a way of ruining things that would otherwise be pleasant.” ~Lemony Snicket
I know, I know, a thumb down to Stonekeep. How dare I? But bear with me, it's an interesting topic to dive into. The story of Stonekeep is the story of that very specific time period when the dungeon crawler genre peaked. In the West at least, because it had a whole different story in Asia, but that's not what we are talking about here. What we are talking about is... well, I guess, it'll be the best to start with the Westwood's Eye of the Beholder. I mean, sure, the whole thing started with FTL's Dungeon Master in 1987. It was Dungeon Master that popularized real-time, first-person, multi-character, tile-based dungeon crawling with smooth movement, physics-like interactions, and an immersive atmosphere. But it was Westwood who brought things on a whole other level. EoB didn't do anything groundbreaking. It just took everything the others did and did it better. All while looking great thanks to the visuals powered by Deluxe Paint (which was a cutting-edge thing back in the 80s). Now, here comes Brian Fargo. Yeah, the Brian Fargo. The founder of Interplay and …

One of the absolute best games from the 90s. This game is an incredible quest that rewards you more and more the more time and care you put into it. I would very much like to know how to get into that secret "Jim" room in the Dwarven Fortress... :)

A really fun game that was on DOS, my dad would talk about this game a lot, and still has the book! I played this game and found it to be fairly fun, it even got him back into playing it. Would recommend.

Stonekeep is an ambitious, atmospheric dungeon crawler that feels like a bridge between classic grid-based RPGs and something more cinematic. Revisiting it now, what stands out most is just how bold it was for its time. The FMV-driven presentation - especially the intro - is genuinely cool, even today, and gives the game a distinct identity that separates it from its peers. Combined with excellent enemy sprite animations that are fluid and expressive, the game creates a world that feels alive despite its technical limitations. At its core, Stonekeep channels the DNA of classics like Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder, but pushes things forward with real-time gameplay and a stronger focus on immersion. Movement is still grid-based, but combat and exploration feel more immediate, making it easier to get into than many of its contemporaries. It really does feel like the next evolutionary step for dungeon crawlers of that era - an attempt to blend traditional mechanics with a more cinematic, story-driven experience. The atmosphere and tone carry a lot of weight here. The story itself is fairly straightforward on the surface, but the world-building and characters - along with those FMV …
