Sunrise GP

I don't normally like racing games, as I am a girl who spends her days (and money) playing Borderlands, but this one was weirdly fun. I am an individual who rages at some rage games. I threw my mouse once or twice in my life. But this game wasn't rage inducing. I liked it.

[b]SUNRISE GP[/b], is a arcade racing game with decent handling and little content. Each car feels unique and appropriately heavy unlike many other cheaper arcade racers. The music is a good mix between both retrowave and lofi, with amazing vocal akin to synthwave. The tracks are beautiful and the graphics are cellshaded stunningly. Which brings the the performance, which Sunrise GP also does great in, with it easily hitting steady high frames even while playing in splitscreen. However, that is where the good things end. The fundamentals of this game are great, however there is little progression and not much to do in the game. You get so much meta-currency but that only gets you cosmetics and rewards for races are mainly the few cars that are in roster. With no tuning, no upgrades, there is little reason to play the game or even use your other cars that are unlocked. Sunrise GP is a compact racer with enough single player content to keep someone busy for a while. The main mode is completing 20 races to unlock new cars and locations. You also earn money for cosmetics. Mission mode is completing one lap with specific cars you’re not allowed to change. Then you have time trial and last man standing variations in quick race mode, there you can customise the amount of laps among other things. There are 21 cars to play with and you can change songs with the in-game radio. The game has the basics of what someone would expect from the genre. The graphics are okay, the controls are good enough and there are some catchy songs. I personally like when racing games don’t have many cars, it makes the ones you can use feel different to control aside from how they look. It makes them worth getting, for a while at least. The races are short, making it easy to quit when needed. When it comes to flaws, it’s going to be hard to be precise this time. The issue is the game feels lacking. It feels lifeless, you’re going through the motions, everything you’re doing feels so standard and not THAT good. It’s missing that bit of spark to make it all worth it. As it s…

It’s not good. The best thing I can say is the graphical style is distinct, marred as it is by severe texture pop in. Tracks have moving bits, usually a helicopter or plane, to give a little flair. Otherwise, it’s so boring. Half of the tracks are not technical at all, meaning I did not need to use my brakes. The physics resemble that of a RC car. It’s easy to grind to a halt if you hit a wall and you make wacky bounces if you go too fast off a hill. AI is absurdly aggressive, to its own detriment because cars would rather hit a wall or each other than stick to a race line. Despite all this, I could easily beat races on hard mode. Invariably, the race would start with AI careening immediately to the sides to attempt ramming other cars. I’d easily thread through the jumble and then overtake the first place car within 30 seconds. Sometimes the second place car would rubber band back to me when I was in first, but then it would aggressively ram my rear bumper and then careen off into the side, leaving me to cruise to an easy win. So boring.

Nice little racing game. Racing is arcadey but also has a physicsy feel to it. Its is very straight forward, there are no boosts, drafting, or power sliding type of mechanics, its all about taking good lines and handling the weighty feel of the cars. The game is easy to look at due to the softer render style and nice colors. There are a lot of tracks and cars, I think over 20 and they're made well. Some tracks have helicopters and planes, which imho is a signature sign of good arcade racers. I wouldnt pay full price for it but on sale it's a fun jump in and out game.
