About Terrain of Magical Expertise

We heard you like games, so we made a game about a game! Terrain of Magical Expertise is a non-linear, story-driven RPG adventure, featuring an original turn-based combat system enhanced with various quicktime events. Your character is a player of a fictional MMORPG which rose to prominence during a (obviously just as fictional) global pandemic, which caused almost everybody to stay home and play games. The game is inspired by a popular animated webseries (but not to worry, you will enjoy playing it even if you have never watched it!) and features a full cast of voice actors, including talents from some of your favorite video games, YouTube channels, anime and cartoons, as well as charming animations and a huge world to explore, “TOME” packs 40+ hours of pure fun.

It's the year 2020, and a popular new MMORPG called "TOME" is hosting a special event with a huge cash prize. You take the role of a White-Hat Hacker, gifted a copy of TOME by a mysterious friend, who asks for a favor to try and take down some sinister Black-Hat Hackers, that are cheating to win the "Campaign of Champions" competition! Joining forces by chance with a guild of determined players called "The Dandy Alliance", you embark on a turn-based role-playing adventure to help your newfound friends achieve victory!
  • Customize your player-character with a variety of magical techniques, all executed via specialized quicktime-events!
  • A fully-voiced adventure, featuring 50 actors from some of your favorite video games, anime and cartoons!
  • Utilize hacker abilities to turn the tide against your cheating enemies...or cheat yourself, manipulating the game's rules!!
  • 6 party member characters, each with unique skills that can combine together into "Team Attacks" that will devastate your foes!
  • 25 stages to explore, with over 200 unique enemies to battle against in turn-based combat!
  • Branching narrative paths based on your decisions...as well as your victories and losses, resulting in multiple endings!
  • Inspired by a hit animated webseries “TOME: Terrain of Magical Expertise”

Ambitious game. Sadly, the game has very nice presentation, but the gameplay is so dauntingly boring that I can't really recommend the game to anybody except mega-fans of TOME web cartoon. + Fully voice-acted, which is impressive + Good OST + Throw-backs to the web series + Entertaining cast + Every "player" you fight against has a unique sprite and voice line, which is cool to see (Kickstarter backers, if I am not mistaken?) * Not original story of TOME but rather a multiverse take on it, mostly same characters, but they are slightly different, in a different setting - Bugs, I fell off the map once, forcing a save load and once got stuck in dialogue forever, not to mention other minor visual glitches and the like - Poorly balanced, game is mostly easy, but every now and then spikes a lot, with a regular guy suddenly one-shotting a party member. In one specific fight early, you can get team wiped before you get a turn (which thankfully does not matter, whether you lose or win that one) - Three save slots, but only one you can save on for current playthrough. Considering the game has different endings, this means you'll have to likely replay the entire game to get them, which…

As a longtime fan of TOME/TTA in all its forms, I'm pretty mixed about this game. This isn't the TOME I love; there's barely any character customization, none of the .hack-adjacent "game-affecting-the-real-world" plotlines, and at times it even makes fun of those previous shows. However, it's also got a lot of great writing, lovable characters, and some truly memorable moments of its own. I was also impressed by the fact that every single bit of dialogue, even from one-off background characters, is fully voiced. As a continuation of TOME's legacy, it's not my favorite. But as a story on its own, this game is great and absolutely worth playing. On the gameplay side of things, it's a fun little RPG with lots of Mario RPG influence and some good gameplay twists that manages to stay fun for the full duration. There are, unfortunately, a noticeable amount of game-breaking bugs that I ran into without especially going looking, which forced me to adopt certain builds (Flower immunity is a hard requirement because it can softlock any battle that inflicts it on you), but they're still possible to work around and didn't detract too much from my enjoyment of the experience. All in al…

Terrain of Magical Expertise is an ambitious, personality-driven RPG developed by NEO-C Productions L.L.C and published by Fulqrum Publishing that wears its inspirations proudly while trying to do something distinctly its own. Framed as a game about logging into a massively popular online RPG during a global lockdown, it blends meta-humor, heartfelt character writing, and tactical combat into a sprawling single-player experience that feels like stepping into a fully realized MMO—without actually being one. From the outset, it’s clear that the developers set out to capture not just the mechanics of role-playing games, but the culture, social dynamics, and emotional investment that surround them. The narrative premise is one of the game’s most distinctive features. You play as a White-Hat Hacker entering the fictional MMO “TOME” to prevent Black-Hat Hackers from exploiting the system and rigging the Campaign of Champions. This setup allows the story to constantly shift between in-world fantasy drama and self-aware commentary on online games, player behavior, and digital escapism. Choices are frequent and often time-sensitive, shaping relationships, story outcomes, and ultimately lea…

I cannot recommend this game. It has some elements that are pretty good, but they are vastly outweighed by the bad. Good: -art -narrative/writing -soundtrack -voice acting Bad: -gameplay -controls are not designed for PC, some of the moves are unusable because of this -UI -presence of some bugs -the combat system is a bad facsimile of Paper Mario's. I truly cannot emphasize enough just how bad the combat in this game is which is a huge negative when its a combat game -can't bring party members with you when exploring the world outside of missions -stats hardly seem to matter. It takes a lot just to increase your base damage by 1 meanwhile your enemies hit you for 30 damage. I would be willing to overlook all of the negative if this game were a small solo product, but not for a studio of this size. Save yourself the frustration. (Took me about 24 hours)
