The Big Con is a quirky game, with vibrant colours, comic-like aesthetics and a nice soundtrack. All that combined creates a very positive energy and charm throughout the gameplay. I guess the story is okay. It’s simple, even funny at times, and it reminds me of those typical teen films from the ‘90s. The characters have interesting personalities and the adventure they embark on allows you to discover several locations and parallel stories. You can wander around at your own pace and always find something to interact with, which is a bonus. There’s basically one mechanic (two if you will), which seems fun for a while but it does become tiresome and repetitive as the game progresses. Additional features might have helped a bit. Sometimes the recognition process (let’s call it that) for when the character can perform an action, especially pickpocketing, seems a bit off. You can approach a victim, the option appears for a moment, but then it suddenly disappears, forcing you to circle the victim until it reappears again. This ends up being quite annoying. A colourful adventure game where, after learning you mother's video store is about to be foreclosed by loan sharks, you become a runaway teen joining a con man pulling scams, picking people's pockets, using disguises and conning people out of money in an attempt to pay off the loan shark. Has a charming 90s aesthetic and art style, a bit of comedy, fun writing and characters. There's one QTE mini-game for pick pocketing (which gets repetitive but you can disable the mini-game to make pick pocketing work immediately) and another for a short autorunner style arcade game. Otherwise, the game plays a lot like a point & click or walking sim, eavesdropping and talking to NPCs and stealing whatever is required. There's no map, it's not a issue on most levels as they are generally small, but the Last Vegas parody would have been easier to navigate with one, I guess. Plenty of missable achievements and collectables with no way to return to past areas to clean-up or chapter select. The game is pretty short through so shouldn't take too long to do a fresh run. 7/10

I wouldn't stop anyone from buying it, but I'm also not actively recommending anyone rush out and start it either. The Big Con has a solid theme and a story that pulls you in early. The 90s throwback setting is fun, the characters have personality, and the premise of running cons across the country gives it a nice hook to start with. The music fits the vibe well too, upbeat and fitting for the road trip energy of the game, though nothing from the soundtrack really stuck with me after I put the controller down. Where things start to slip is the gameplay itself. It's enjoyable for the first stretch, but the loop wears thin fast, and by the halfway point you can feel the repetition setting in and it doesn't let up. Clocking in around four and a half hours, the game leans pretty heavily on that same simple gameplay loop to carry a story that isn't doing quite enough to justify asking players to stick with it that long. A charming game with nice graphics and nice music - I really enjoyed my foray into becoming a teenager drawn into petty crime to help out her Mom. Once I got tired of the pickpocketing minigame, I took the option to turn it off in the settings. Thoroughly enjoyed my time accompanying Ali on this trip across the country. Genuinely a lot of fun!

An Absolutely Radical Story-Based Adventure game! Not quite a point-and-click adventure, with enough variations in gameplay, mini-games and mini-choices to be fun. Story was great but predictable, in a good way tho. Great 8-10 hour game.
