Hypnospace Outlaw

This game is a tad unique point and click. You're a Hypnospace Enforcer, basically a step below a Reddit moderator that cannot speak, tasked with "finding infractions" in what I can best describe as (quite creative) fictional Neocities websites within the fictional Hypnospace operating system (HypnOS). For this you get a few tools other HypnoSpace netizens do not possess: An index tag search (for browsing pages), reporting tools, and a brain to turn "malware" into enforcement tools. Initially you will be given direct cases to work with, such as harassment by a specific user. You will then search for this user and start discovering the plot - A teen will have created a mean page, hidden from the main index, bullying another teen. You need to locate it within the system and flag the content there to solve the case. This means checking other blogs that may share the page in schadenfreude, or simply browsing the username after the pages he has created and eventually finding it there. One will be a report of an external link being used for payment, so you'll have to look for pages trying to hide this service link, whether by paying some crypto or using your search tool correctly. Truly one of my favorites of all time. I come back to this every couple years and just wish I could forget everything about it to play it for the first time again. 10/10 can't recommend it enough. RIP Dreamsettler genuinely devastating there will never be a sequel T.T

There's a lot to like about Hypnospace Outlaw, the visuals, the sounds, the design, its all so perfectly encapsulates the nostalgic feeling of the old internet. It's easy to get lost here reading through different people's personal websites and becoming part of it's world. Many times I genuinely kept alt-tabbing to switch the tabs in-game only to minimize the game because I was so invested. I really liked the early parts of the game acting as a moderator for this virtual world, tracking down illegal content and issuing takedowns. At the very beginning of the game, you experience what is quite literally an interactive employee training course which acts as the game's tutorial, which I loved so much. The missions are sent via email too for that extra immersion. Though the first half of the game is fairly straight forward in gameplay and what I would say is manageable, the latter half is quite difficult, at least for me. I don't think the game does the best at explaining some of the steps youll have to take to figure out the later puzzles.
