The Ghost of Alcantra

One of the programers for the game joined me as I streamed this and encouraged me to leave a review. :3 I don't normally bother with every game, but here we are. I did enjoy the game quite a bit, and this feels like much too good a game to be free like it is. The story was touching, and I liked the presentation and . . . circulur nature of the narritive. <3

Drop everything you are doing and play this game now. Please, you will not regret it. Quite possibly my favourite story that I've ever read. I cried and I laughed and I cried some more. I'm not very good with words so I can't quite explain what I loved so much about this visual novel. I'll let the other reviews do that for me. Just play the game already, its free after all. It's simply an injustice that such a good story only has 25 reviews on steam and is completely free on top of that, so the least you can do for the creator is to play their work of love. I hope you all will love this game as much as I have and that it can help you as much as it has helped me. We are but stars in the boundless universe and stories are the bridges that connects us all. And this bridge, "the Ghost of Alcantra", might be the one closest to my heart. I hope that my love of games and stories will be as everlasting as the love story between our two delightful main characters. Have fun playing this masterpiece. :)

The Ghost of Alcantra is a visual novel that surprised me with how ambitious its story becomes. It follows two connected timelines, with one focusing on a developing relationship in the past and the other following a murder investigation in the future. I liked the structure because the two stories gradually start answering questions about each other instead of feeling like completely separate plots. The romance side follows Nick Fox and Alexandria, while the mystery side follows an amnesiac narrator working with Detective Scarlet Storm. I enjoyed switching between these perspectives because I was constantly looking for connections between the characters and events. The story stays kinetic rather than turning into a branching choice based novel, so the focus is entirely on following the narrative. The writing is easily the strongest part for me. The murder mystery gives the relationship scenes an underlying sense of tension, while the older setting helps create a nostalgic atmosphere. It was well written and touching. As it says in the credits, a lot of the story elements are similar to things I've read or seen before. But I liked the presentation. I found the main characters likable and empathized with them. It held my attention and my emotions. The pictures used as a background is not normally something I'd expect to be into, but it kinda worked here. The character art was charming. Not as animated as some VNs, but I'm okay with that. Quick edit because I wanted to mention: The images of Alexandria smiling and expressing joy are some of the best expressions of those emotions that I have ever seen. I've got aphantasia and it's generally really difficult for me to sort of extrapolate things about characters beyond what I am directly provided. But those frames in general expressed her joy so well to me that I even cried at that. The character art might not shoot for the stars in terms of level of detail and stuff, but what they went for, I think they achieved so well. Grammatically, it has a lot of run-on sentences and a few other random things, but it wasn't bad enough to detract from anything. I would say it's generally fairly good. I see it doesn't have many…
