The Godbeast

Extremely clunky, feels very far from finished from the get-go. Nothing in this game works as one would expect.

*Disclaimer: Wrote this on my own accord. It isn't a review in exchange for a code thing.* It can be hard to figure out what's a platform and what's not a platform. The sky and platforms are the exact same or a similar shade of colour. Currently early on in the game. Can't make it past the first climbing section. I somehow randomly pulled it off the first time. I ended up on the very top of a pillar and couldn't get off. I tried pressing a bunch of keys. I eventually gave up. I recently decided to try getting off the pillar again. I couldn't get the character to enter climbing mode. I don't know how I pulled it off the first time. Can anyone help me?

This game feels like much more of a proof of concept compared to the devs previous game Malebolgia, which was a very straightforward homage to classic horror games. Course that doesn't mean your initial impression betrays you, this game wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Yes, this is very inspired by Shadow of the Colossus (and maybe a bit of Dragons Dogma). But the mazelike city, and enemies in the environment, soulslike bosses and mini-bosses are all a lot more experimental, particularly in the ways they come together in the central mechanic of the game. Tracking. The large beast that you are hunting move around should you fall, at which point you get back on your bike and find them. Killing enemies aligned to the one you're tracking will tell you the region they're in and from there, your spear will lead the way. Its both were this game lives and dies. Its such a great idea and it really encourages learning the environment. And you would THINK that its an incentive to hold on as long as possible and do as much damage in one attempt. I'm unsure if I was just coincidentally unlucky or ignored a mechanic, but it seemed as though my best rounds of damage would be followed by repe…

This game is frustratingly close to "good". The atmosphere is great, but I so wish that traversal was a bit less obtuse, the combat a bit more methodical... I hope that the sequel addresses these issues, but I am not willing to cough up the money to check.

I was given a key to play this game as a part of the 1 Up Indie Spotlight and I was blown away at how much fun I had playing this on stream! The graphics are very nice and remind me of old cell shaded games like Killer7. The controls are smooth and responsive! I always say that you can tell how much work went into combat by testing out how good the roll feels, and this game has a VERY good feeling roll! The music compliments the dark atmosphere and the vocals that come in during some of the fights adds a lot to the encounters. Also, you can call for a bike from across the map and it'll zoom on over to you automatically, which never ceases to be funny and amazing. I genuinely recommend people try out this game! A lot of work went into The Godbeast and I could sing its praises for hours!
