The best showcase of graphic power in VR so far! Maybe this is the most advanced simulation of reality in VR in terms of visual fidelity. It challenges the limits of today hardware. There are several experiences reaching quite good realism thanks to photorealistic environments realized with photogrammetry technique. E.g. see Roald Amundsen's House on Steam. However most of times photogrammetric environments look "dead", "artificial". Not the case of Homestead. And do you know why? Because of state-of-the-art simulation and rendering of light in VR. In Homestead you can enjoy realistic reflections, refraction, scattering, transparency, volumetric effects, shadows. The first time you enter the house , it's just breathtaking, mind blowing. When you take some steps in the house or change your point of view, reflection of light changes like in real reality. Not by chance, despite the environment is very limited, just three rooms, Homestead takes circa 25GB on my SSD! My beefy and overclocked air cooled PC seems to take flight while running Homestead on the Reverb G2! The house is surrounded by the sea; outside it's raining. An honest disappointment. It doesn't look anywhere near as good in VR as it does in the pictures. The controls feel broken on a Valve Index, trying to turn around or use locomotion also teleports you, making it impossible to smoothly move through the scene. I also couldn't even find the outdoor scenes like in the pictures, from what I gather it's just a 3 room building, that's it. For 27 gigabytes, this is not impressive. I bet this could be done better with the same amount time with traditional mesh-based geometry, for smaller file size and it won't be all wobbly at the edges either due to the scan artifacts.

The Homestead is a small but highly immersive and enjoyable project. I've experience a fair amount of virtual galleries and I can't say that I've seen this level of detail put into the rendering of canvases before. The feeling of being in a building surrounded by unending water is serene as well; I sometimes like to just come in here and sit in front of the windows for a bit. Definitely worth a try!
