The Oni Sellsword

As advertised, it is very short and sweet, but I think it has a lot of potential if the developer ever wanted to revisit and expand on it. The worldbuilding is subtle but intriguing, the combat system is loads of fun, and the characters are likable. Some of the dialogue is a bit awkward and overly modern compared to the rest of the setting, but there is a lot to like in a little over an hour of gameplay.

The definition of a "short and sweet" experience. Minimal story but what's there is good; left me wanting to know more about the world which is always a positive. Combat isn't too challenging but has some fun tactical choices; enemies are varied and so are your skills (within the confines of being a 90-minute JRPG of course) I did have experience an issue in the first area where occasionally the screen would freeze during combat (game was responsive otherwise, just no change in the frame); saving after every combat is painless and it's rare so not a big deal (playing on Proton so I'm sure that's a factor but no energy to investigate)

I enjoyed my time with it, short and sweet. The character art is really cute and the tunes are nice as well.

RPG Maker strikes again! The Oni Sellsword is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This is a particularly bad RPG Maker asset flip, and to the surprise of nobody, features heavily the developers imaginary girlfriend/waifu as we plod through a godawfully bad kitbash with, you guessed it, high school anime club dropout fan-fiction cringefest writing. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
