This is a short game originally intended for public display at locations around Worcester. Suitable for all ages.

Dominated by the River Severn which flows through it, Worcester is already at the mercy of nature, and regularly experiences flooding which leads to residents and wildlife alike, modifying their lifestyle. The Severn Rising 2222 project, challenges the player to learn more about climate change, pollution and the direct impact it will have on their community.

The game brings together beautiful, vibrant depictions of nature and Worcester’s landmarks by artist Sarah Millin, with the game design skills of Paradise Multimedia. The game was developed through a series of creative workshops held in heritage, cultural and environmental venues, across Worcester during 2022. The workshops encouraged participation from a wide demographic of Worcester residents and explored environmental impact through art.

The voices and ideas of the residents of Worcester, form the basis of the Severn Rising illustrations and animation and the engagement of the community was central to placing the project at the heart of The City. An exciting legacy of the workshops were the messages in a bottle written by the workshop participants. The messages provide a tantalising prediction of how participants envisage Worcester to look in 200 years’ time.

A key feature of the game is the beautiful Worcester locations that the characters visit, which are based upon the partner sites and buildings which the artists felt held a special interest to the community. There is a real array of architecture in Worcester’s skyline, and this is reflected in the mixture of Tudor, Victorian and Brutalist building that are highlighted in Severn Rising.

Now you have read all about the development of the project, why not be transported 200 years into the future in flooded Worcester and experience The Severn Rising 2222 for yourself?

The Severn Rising 2222 project has been made possible through generous support of the Arts Council England, Elmley Foundation & Worcester City Council.

Players consistently praise the game's beautiful, artistic visuals and thought-provoking story concept, with its watercolor-style artwork being a standout feature. However, they frequently criticize the clunky interface and sluggish gameplay mechanics, particularly the slow movement, tedious backtracking, and long pauses between dialogue that detract from the experience and feel poorly suited to a Steam release. While the game succeeds as a unique art experience, most acknowledge it prioritizes artistic presentation over engaging gameplay, though its free price point makes it a worthwhile expl

The game is beautiful, but the interface is beyond awful : just moving around (not to mention backtracking) is a pain in the ... wrist. Another great idea spoiled by mobile design ideology.

"The Severn Rising 2222" is a community art piece from the UK that plays out a bit like an episode of the documentary "Life After People" (it's a good documentary if you get a chance to watch it). People are gone 200 years in the future and you go on a narrative art experience with a swan and a duck. What do you do in the game? You explore locations, talk to characters, and solve inventory puzzles in a classic point-and-click adventure style, but all of this is done badly, movement is sluggish.. this is bad even as a browser game, but now it's on Steam trying to compete with PC games... no chance. So, it's hard to describe this as a game, the focus of the product is more like that of an "art experience", there's only minor, shallow and uninteresting gameplay elements. Yes, games can be art, art is where the pinnacle of imagination and narrative meet the apex of craftsmanship... this has neither good creativity or craftsmanship. The Mona Lisa wouldn't be hanging in the Louvre if she was drawn in crayon on the back of a coaster. This is a browser game... it doesn't matter if this was ported to PC before or after the website publication. This is built for the absolutely lowest…

I enjoyed the game quite a lot. The only issue I have with the game is that the dialog is painfully slow between when one character talks and the other character responds. It took me 2.7 hours to complete the game due to the long pauses between dialogues. I'm not sure if it is because my laptop is Windows 10 and can't update to Windows 11, or if it's the game itself. The artwork in the game is lovely and reminds me of a collage of watercolor paintings. Thank you so much for sharing your art and game on steam for free. I would fully support this game even if it was a few dollars to buy the game.

The Severn Rising 2222 is a simple game which feels a bit like a student project. Despite of that it still has a lot charm and I enjoyed my time with it. It is free and it is short; there are worse ways to spend one's time than with this game.
