The story never goes beyond an army fighting off invaders from space, but if you're interested in learning more about the characters and enemies, you can visit the Command Center from the main menu. It offers a bit of extra background, although the main attraction here is clearly the gameplay. While it plays like a traditional space shoot'em-up, the game mixes in plenty of roguelite progression, which mostly translates into grinding. The biggest example is the pilot system. You only have one pilot available at the start, so there isn't much choice initially, but every mission attempt earns experience. As you level up, you unlock permanent perks such as increased movement speed, better defense, a stronger magnet for collecting pickups, and several other upgrades. The game clearly shows how much experience is needed for each unlock. Before each mission, you also choose your ship, defensive ability, starting weapon, and hacks, which are modifiers that improve certain stats. Once you're happy with your loadout, it's time to head into battle. Missions follow a linear progression, so clearing one unlocks the next. Pure arcade action wrapped in stylish CRT shaders! If what you're after is a game (not a 'story' or an 'experience') then you won't be dissapointed!
