Thunder Striker is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up in the style of a Game Boy game. It's a simple, classic shmup that despite a few gripes and glitches is fun. The player's ship is equipped with a basic main forward attack. There are two weapon upgrade that can be applied to the ship at the same time via pick ups. The first adds a secondary attack of additional forward shot, homing missiles and spread shot. Each with their pros and cons depending on the enemy types the player encounters. The second modifies the primary shot or adds more bombs. Both weapon systems can be powered up with additional pick ups. The player also has limited use bombs at their disposal. These work like most shooters, fire the bomb and gain invincibility for a few seconds. I haven't played enough, but it also seems the bomb's effect is not the entire screen. They also seem to be meant for use as defensive weapons. I tried to spam bombs on the enemy, and it would allow it until the invincibility wore off or something. Thunder Striker is a fun pick up & play vertical shmup that does an excellent job capturing the simple charm of GameBoy gaming. The presentation is great, with the monochrome graphics used to great effect to create mechanical vehicles and structures typical of the genre. The tunes are also evocative of similar games, although I could not pin down whether they were inspired by a particular game. If you have a soft spot for GameBoy gaming, this will scratch that itch. The mechanics are very simple: No grazing or charge shots or polarities or proximity bonuses or anything like that. You can shoot (the default auto-fire is nice) and use bombs, and that's it. There are two primary weapons to choose from (occasionally dropped by enemies), and each can be powered up by repeatedly picking up the same weapon type (up to level 5). There are also three secondary weapon types, combining with your primary weapon to give you a decent amount of offensive firepower. The manual suggests you mix and match to find the best combinations for each stage and boss, but I generally stuck to the lazer for its damage output and the homing missiles for being the only way to attack enemies approaching from b…

Sometimes you really wish you could give a sideways thumb. The game isn't really bad, though not extremely interesting, and I really like the music. But what really kills it for me is sometimes the bomb flat out doesn't work, leading to deaths that i know shouldn't have happened and wouldn't have happened in any other shmup I play, and for this reason I can't really recommend it. I don't know if it's a me issue or what, but if it's not then that's just kind of a bummer.
