About Tombeaux
Tombeaux is a short first-person exploration game set in a historically accurate 3D environment. Developed as a solo art, design, and research project by Dave Beck, this interactive historical experience investigates the convergence between cultures and the environment across a few hundred years of midwestern American history. Through exploration, the player discovers various unique objects, environments, and narratives, all of which cause reflection upon our history and our future.
Unique points about the game:
*Dave Beck will be donating 100% of the profits from Tombeaux right back to protecting the river which it is based upon. The donation will be made to the St. Croix Watershed Research Station in Minnesota, in order to continue to support research on the river and the Artist at Pine Needles Program, from which this game was first envisioned.
Note on Partial Controller Support: After navigating the Unity Launcher that appears when starting the game with a keyboard and mouse, Tombeaux has full controller support within the game itself
Unique points about the game:
- Realistic exploratory world
- Historically researched and presented narrative and events, meant to be both educational and contemplative
- Environment transforms in reaction to progress in game
- Game Audience: All ages, including non-gamers and gamers
- Game Style/Type: Atmospheric, Story-rich Walking Simulator (minimal controls and mechanics, with a larger focus on story and environment)
- Focus Issues: The human nature to desire control, environmental awareness, and historical consequence
- The game is meant to be an artistic experience & concept for the player, lasting roughly 30-60 minutes
- Solo Project by Dave Beck

I really liked this game. Went to see it in person on release date from the developer at the Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum way back in 2018, and I'm glad I finally finished playing it recently. Takes no more than ~40 minutes to complete. I really do deeply appreciate the meticulousness and time taken to do all this research and documentation to put it together. For the time and effort put in (for zero return, by the way) at its price, not to mention all revenue going to proceeds, I cannot in good faith give this game a negative review. I wouldn't have regardless. I strive for learning intimately about such facets of American history and this definitely succeeds in that very goal it set out to do. That said, some things are worth noting. For such a project, there's only so much you can introduce in one short setting and timeframe, and this is purely a critique of gameplay time and constraints, not historical factors. If the developer wanted to tell a more expansive story, a lot more time and effort would have had to be put in, which I can agree is a fault to a certain extent. Many must recognize the gravity and benchmark for such a research-intensive development, especially …3 found this helpful
Interesting idea, but that's about it. No matter your hardware, the game is extremely laggy, inside the house mouse sensitivity is, for some reason, about 1/4 of what it is outside, some narrators seemingly used their cheap headphone microphones to record their voices and, best of all... ...the walking sound on dirt/grass is literally the Dirt sound effect stolen from Minecraft.3 found this helpful

Before reading any further, note that "100% of the profits from Tombeaux right back to protecting the river which it is based upon" according to the description below. This is a worthy effort regardless of anything else, and if nothing else you can consider your purchase of this game as a bit of charity and goodwill. Now, Tombeaux is first and foremost a warning and somber reminder about the lingering horrors of manifest destiny. Certainly there are moments of serenity and calm where a person could just sit for a while and listen, but the encroaching tone of destructive change is ever present. This is less a game and more an interactive art project. With that in mind, it is really that message that matters most and I can't fault Tombeaux for that. It's an important message to be sure. As far as the visuals and actual "gameplay" go, though, there isn't much to say. You don't actually "do" a ton, and the environments are certainly not mindblowing/lifelike in quality. And yet, there is a simple charm to it all, even in its more somber moments. This feels like one of those edutainment games you might play as part of a lesson in school, and perhaps some out there have. I would have lo…1 found this helpful
Not worth of your money and time.
I play this game (I think I 've got a free keys) en enjoy it. It's short, immersive, but quite annoying, we can't do what you want. The story is interesting, although a little too much... The graphics are good, nothing more. I recommend the game but not for 3.99 ... It's too expensive for 20 minutes.
