About Uncanny Valley

Uncanny Valley is a survival horror game, focusing on a bone chilling story, exploration and heart pounding action.

Uncanny Edition: if you buy this, you get the game and the soundtrack bundled together for a lower price.

About the game:
Uncanny Valley is a survival horror game that includes a mix of exploration, puzzle solving and a bit of action with a lot of optional story content. We're trying to preserve the old survival horror kind of gameplay instead of following the modern trend of creating a third person shooter with horror elements.

Story:
You play as a security guard named Tom at a remote facility. He's in charge of the night shift, while his lazy partner Buck is in charge of the day shift. Nights are long, so Tom starts exploring the facility and finds things he shouldn't. The story plays a huge part in the game, so saying anything more would be a major spoiler.

Consequence system:
Uncanny Valley's main difference from other games is a thing we like to call the consequence system. Whenever you fail at something, the game goes on, but with harsh consequences for your character that can impact both the story and the gameplay.

For example - you fail at avoiding your attackers, meaning your character will move slower throughout the game, making it harder to escape future pursuers. The player then needs to be careful and more clever, which adds more tension to the game. Of course, there are mistakes you can do that lead to your death, but we're trying to avoid that as much as possible.

Why? Because dying and repeating the same section over and over is tedious and leads to frustration. The game stops being scary if you're angry and just want to rush through it, so we think that adding such a system will still keep the tension while adding a new layer to scariness.

Key Features:
  • a huge, explorable facility with multiple floors and buildings
  • intense moments of dread
  • detailed story with rich characters
  • consequence system mechanic

There's a great idea buried here, under some not great design choices. A game involving multiple playthroughs, with lots of choices under strict time limits revealing pieces of a story bit by bit is great on paper, but when the actual gameplay itself isn't any more compelling than going left and right in the exact same hallways and forest paths it gets old fast. The atmosphere dissipates, and you find yourself just running as much as possible to trigger something happening without much thought to immersing yourself in the story. It's too bad, cause when the atmosphere and story hits it's great and effective - but it fades so fast when you're just slowly checking empty floors and rooms because you didn't know where something is happening. It's hard to feel engaged when the game's answer to above is "oh well, guess you gotta play this now useless run out and start all over and try somewhere different next time"

Uncanny valley its a great game. honestly, it is one of the best indie games i hv ever played. The story , graphics, constant feeling of fear, mystery and being stalked make this game unique. unfortunately, the game does not answer a lot of questions, plus its very short. you can beat the game in less than 20 minutes... The game has multiple endings, there are 7 different ones to discover DEPENDING on your choices. this game deserved more recognition. if you like indie horror games, you should give it a try. my rating for this game is 8.5/10

This is from the pixeljank boom, and it *really* feels it. Slow pace. Absent UI. There's like four different interact buttons depending on circumstance (space, E, enter, up) but there's no indicator on which you should use or when something is interactive. Using the inventory feels like tooth extraction. Environments are big and empty and you have the stamina bar of an asthmatic gerbil. The rough thing is, I think this would work with a point and click adventure interface. Truncate the rooms, make the interaction points clear, make the inventory useable. The atmosphere, sound, and pixel art aren't bad. It's just interacting with the game feels terrible, unrewarding, and time-wasting. For a game from a similar era that lands Silent Hill in a more playable way, try Lone Survivor. Or play any of the modern SHlikes. To enjoy Uncanny Valley, I think you have to be really determined to enjoy Uncanny Valley. I struggled to get into it, and then all my interactions bugged out, and again the game *does not* like telling you what you're intended to be able to do. I don't mind having supported the developer but I don't think this one's for me.

One of the most boring games I've played in my entire life... I tried to give it a chance twice, but no, this is simply unbearable.

Uncanny Valley is a dark, story-focused horror game where you play a night guard working in a strange, isolated facility that clearly isn’t as abandoned as it first seems. Things start small and unsettling, then slowly spiral into something much more disturbing. What really works is the atmosphere and the way your choices matter. The game constantly makes you feel uneasy, and the retro visuals and sound design add to that tension without relying on cheap jump scares. It’s the kind of horror that gets under your skin and makes you curious to replay it just to see how different decisions change the outcome.

This game tries to hard to be scary... and fails miserably.
