Unit 404

Imagine making a fantastic puzzle game, then ruining it with lack of undo and unskippable animations. Unit 404 has a lovely aesthetic, including music and animations. Its earlier levels are doable and enjoyable despite the already annoying lack of undo, but in later levels (i.e. roughly around level 46, when the Rotator block is introduced), lack of undo becomes outright unacceptable. That plus the long and unskippable animations makes the game unfinishable, because it turns the process of puzzle-solving, which should be enjoyable and quick and full of exploration, into a conservative experience where you're afraid of making any moves at all - because any mistake means you have to replay a bunch of the level. And heaven forbid if you misclick; then you still have to replay the lengthy levels. It's a pity how much a single design decision can ruin what could otherwise have been an unambiguously great game.

This is a very good puzzle game with 1 major flaw and that is a rewind button. There is nothing wrong with the puzzle design , the game is divided in 5 chapters and in each you are introduced slowly to new mechanics. Nothing ground breaking but very good puzzles at times very hard, you have 4 chapters for casual puzzle fans and chapter 5 for hardcore fans. I finished chapter 5 but all I can say is - Good luck solving the last level - and here is where we come to 1 major flaw this game has and that is a rewind button. To be honest I think for many players this will be an instant turnoff because this game is not easy and many levels involve trial and error so it can get very frustrating to solve harder levels. I can guarantee I would have 8 hrs less if they implemented a rewind function. I recommend this game for people who have nerves of steel because in the end this is a very good puzzle game with some complex puzzles. Shame that developers gave up on this game.

Unit 404 is a fantastic puzzle game! Its 79 puzzles are logical and will leave your head scratching, the mechanics are clear and intuitive, the visuals are gorgeous, and the sound effects make the whole experience more immersive. I unfortunately got stumped and had to look up part of the solution to the last level, but I had a lot of fun all throughout. Highly recommend it, it's well worth the challenge and very cheap for the amount of value it has!

Giving this a thumbs up just for the T-800 achievement.

This is the type of game where the trailer can't really make it any justice. When you have a puzzle game with a variety of elements that can be mixed like this, the easiest (and maybe laziest) design option would be to just increase the complexity of levels gradually. Unit 404 sticks to clever and simple designs for the most part instead. A lot of levels are deceptively easy, it didn't take long for me to get stuck on of those: the most obvious strategy won't work and the layout is so simple you swear there is nothing else you can try. And suddenly (ten minutes staring at the screen later) it clicks! It's so satisfactory and it's the sort of experience you can't predict by just looking at the game. The level design here is very competent. If I have one criticism is that there is a huge difficulty jump from chapter 4 to 5 because the game shifts towards complexity at that point. It didn't affect my enjoyment personally, but it felt out of place. At that point in the game you are already familiarized with all the puzzle blocks, but the amount of movements involved is tenfold and so is the chance of mistakes. And there is no undo button. Magnific puzzle game if you like challenges. The difficulty goes in crescendo from the beginning so you can easily know where are your limits (in fact, the achievements completion ratio shows this). The puzzles are not based on ability, proper timing or some kind of handicap. The rules are clear and with those rules you must find the solution. There's no undo button, which sometimes might be frustrating, so you will need a plan before trying to solve each level.
