Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening

Overall I would give the game a 7/10, but its charm lies in the details rather than the broader picture. There are so many little touches given to the gameplay that show it was made with love to be a fun RPG with fun things to play with and it shows. There's so many small enjoyable additions to the RPG formula that have you going "oh huh, that's neat" the entire way, such as random encounters instead being determined by an encounter bar that can be reduced with orbs found along the main story path, creating a risk reward between going out and scavenging for resources, or staying minimally to the beaten path. Another detail I like is how instead of characters learning moves at levels, every fight drops obols which can be spent on *anybody* for either attacks, passives, or hp/sp boosts, which makes building divergent and interesting, especially with how nicely everybody's abilities combo with something else in their tree. It was always fun to build the characters, and each one has something fairly unique going on. Finally finished the game after the fifth attempt! (minus the post-game Hell dungeon but that will soon be conquered). I kept falling off for various IRL reasons either 1/2-way or 3/4-way through. My immediate thought is that I was genuinely surprised by the lack of Kasey Ozymy in the credits. I was introduced to the game by his initial tweet when it first released and the extreme similarities in the art and music had me convinced he must have contributed significantly to the game but apparently not. IIRC he said the dev was a friend so I guess that's why. Seriously, while overall it's its own thing the enemy sprite art and a lot of the music is very reminiscent of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. I forget which one but there was one track in particular that reminded me so much of the math hell dungeon in that game. I think it's a terrible shame you haven't charged for this tbqh. This is easily one of the best RPGmaker games I've had the pleasure to play and it's easily with $20 (more realisticvally $10 given how undervalued indie game prices are...). 15-20 hour minimum, more with 100% completion, even moreso with a second playthrough that is at least worth doing a couple yea…

While I didn't finish the game, I still enjoyed it very much. I stopped about 1 hour after after They Cannot Be Saved. It is a good game. The characters are enjoyable and I love the protagonist's general personality and story. Best aunt in video games, as far as I'm concerned.

MEDIUM, neither thumbs up or down. Opinion changed after the bonus dungeon which was actually better than the dungeon leading to the first ending. Overall it's an Interesting game on some levels, retro style graphics, kind of a horror type of RPG and the enemy sprites are different and sometimes horrifying. The music is hit or miss, sometimes it can be good, other times it is ear splittingly annoying. The more conventional tracks are generally better; One of the battle themes was legit good. But sometimes battles dragged too much. Overall developers tried to innovate but they went too far with the last dungeon, starting from the point where Alicia is split from her other three team mates until the very end, that last portion was too aimless, does not make much sense, and was poorly designed. A map, even if it was something to toggle on or off in the options would have been a huge plus. On the other hand, there are a ton of secrets spread throughout the game.
