About YIIK: A Postmodern RPG

✦ AI summary

YIIK I.V is a surreal adventure where you navigate the blurred lines between reality and dreams, solving puzzles and battling bizarre entities with turn-based combat that punishes every mistake through an escalating bleeding system. Its haunting narrative weaves between two protagonists uncovering impossible truths across shifting realities, backed by an eclectic 200-track soundtrack performed by live musicians.

An unusual error manifests on April 4th, a day that echoes the enigmatic code 404. In a desperate act of innocence, a child relinquishes her name for an invitation to a birthday party, her hope tethered to the faint possibility of finding her brother. Meanwhile, Alex, a recent college graduate, returns home, only to find his reality unspooling like a threadbare tapestry. Guided by a cat which slips through the very fabric of his mind, Alex descends into the depths of his consciousness where he witnesses the impossible: a woman, locked away in an iron maiden, vanishing into thin air. A vision which ignites an undying obsession and threatens to unravel the boundaries of his world.
 • Combat in YIIK I.V is an arcane dance, a turn-based system where players use everyday weapons against bizarre entities, aided by the power of Karta. When players or enemies take damage, they start to bleed, and every action taken while bleeding brings them closer to defeat. It’s a race against time to outlast the enemy and stem the flow of blood.
 • Navigate landscapes that blur the line between reality and dreams. These spaces are filled with intricate puzzles, deadly traps, and odd adversaries that challenge your perception, pushing the boundaries of what you know to be real.
 • The narrative shifts between the perspectives of Alex and the Nameless Child, drawing you into their separate yet intertwined realities, each twist revealing deeper layers of their destinies.
 • The game’s soundtrack features over 200 tracks across a wide range of genres, from drum and bass to progressive rock. Much of the music is performed by live musicians, adding a vibrant and authentic layer to the experience.
SAVE ONISM MAN

KILL ONISM MAN
Most likely one of the most misrepresented and unfairly judged games of all time. If you were like me and disregarded this game as pretentious garbage back when the 2019 youtube review hatetrain was in full swing, give YIIK I.V. a fair chance. Look beyond the surface level and engage with the work on its own terms. Just trust me on this.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Reviews! (skip to The Ugly if you don't want to read) The Good the artstyle is unique and actually refreshing it's a little ugly and choppy like my old ps1 but different enough to be its own thing which is admirable. The pacing is pretty good for what I've played. The nostalgia is well represented here, it touches the late 90s early 2000s internet surprisingly well despite not being its primary focus. I appreciate the commitment to Alex "being the worst protagonist" I've ever had the displeasure of playing as in a game ever (aside from Bubsy), constantly being a petulant child and an egoist including but not limited to being self centered, a spoiled brat, ungrateful and a ♥♥♥♥ to his mom and many other things I'm sure I've yet to experience (since I'm dropping this game) I also praise the little details like his house being the biggest one in Frankton (hinting at his egotism and establishing him as an unreliable narrator) (How the hell does a single mom with two kids afford that!?). The gameplay is great even though I didn't re…

You know, there was a Youtube video that described how playing Atari 2600 games during a hot summer in the 1980s felt like communicating with aliens from outer space. Playing YIIK for the first time during this summer actually evoked a similar feeling and made me think about that description again. Besides that, I think YIIK understood the "Earthbound-inspired" assignment pretty well, especially the I.V update. I love the more strategic combat system of the update, but I appreciate the option to go back to the old battle mode because the difference between Dark Game and old battle mode is night and day, and anyone who's even curious about what YIIK was like before I.V should enable it when that's available. Honestly the one real gripe I have about it is the inability to skip dialogues specifically, which just makes it so I have to mash the A button through those for repeat playthroughs,

i used to be someone repulsed by yiik because of the loud outcries, but ever since i played 1.5 i've been under the influence of yiikmania to the point i have admiration and have intense intrigue at picking apart the minds of both game and developer's thoughts encompassing it. genuinely an intriguing game and story. i cant believe i fell for the FF13 hate phenomena a second time, man.
