EA FC 27 price: the editions, and whether FC 26 is the buy

EA's football game arrives every September with three editions, an early-access window and a lot of noise, and the EA FC 27 price question usually gets answered badly — by looking only at the new box. The more useful number this week belongs to last year's game. Since we started tracking EA SPORTS FC 26 in mid-June, its cheapest listing has gone up, not down, as FC 27 approached. That is the opposite of what most buyers assume, and it changes the answer.

Here is what EA is actually selling, what the free version does, and which of the two games is the sensible buy right now.

What the EA FC 27 price buys you: three editions

EA's own editions page lists three tiers, and the gap between them is entirely Ultimate Team currency and early access — not content.

• Standard Edition — the full game at launch, plus pre-order trinkets: Pre-Order Challenges, three ICONs or Heroes on loan in Career, a five-star coach and scout, and a 92+ OVR ICON item for FC 26.
• Ultimate Edition — everything above plus up to seven days of early access, a Season 1 Premium Pass, up to 6,000 FC Points and an extra Player Evolution slot.
• Ultimate Plus Edition — Premium Passes for Seasons 1 to 5, up to 10,000 FC Points, an 85+ OVR International ICON, a Hall of FUT direct player pick, and a longer list of Career bonuses.

Two things about that list matter more than the tier names. The Ultimate Plus Edition was an early-bird product only: EA states it was available between 23 July and 31 August 2026, and not on Nintendo platforms or the Epic Games Store at all. If you are reading this now, that decision has already been made for you.

The second thing: early access started on 18 September 2026 for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus buyers, with global launch on 25 September 2026. So the premium tiers' headline benefit — the week of early play — is mostly spent by the time the game is out. Paying the Ultimate uplift today buys you FC Points and a season pass, and nothing else you can still use.

FC 27 Lite is free, and it is a real demo

The part of the launch worth knowing about costs nothing. EA is releasing FC 27 Lite on 25 September 2026 at 16:00 UTC, described on EA's own page as free access to "select game modes, such as Kick-Off", with the option to upgrade to the full game at any time.

This is the single best piece of buying advice available this week: play Lite first. Football games are iterative, and the changes between one year and the next are in feel rather than feature lists. A kick-off match tells you within twenty minutes whether this year's build is for you — a review cannot.

Where you can buy it, and why that matters

EA lists FC 27's Ultimate and Standard editions on the EA app, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. EA's buy page also lists an EA Play Pro Edition, which bundles 6,000 FC Points, up to seven days of early access and the Season 1 Premium Pass into the subscription rather than a purchase.

That subscription route is genuinely worth doing the arithmetic on if you play the game hard for two months and then stop, which is what most people do with an annual football title. Check what a Pro month costs against the Standard edition on the FC 27 page before you decide — the comparison changes every year.

Why FC 26 got more expensive, not cheaper

Here is the part nobody tells you. The received wisdom is that last year's football game collapses in price when the new one lands. Our own tracking says otherwise, at least right now.

Across June, July and August 2026, the cheapest tracked listing for FC 26 repeatedly sat under three dollars — those were grey-market key resellers, not EA. Through September, as FC 27's launch approached, the cheapest available listing climbed into the teens, and as of 24 September 2026 the lowest tracked price is higher still. The floor rose by roughly an order of magnitude in three months.

The mechanism is not mysterious. Cheap keys for a year-old sports title are a finite pile of stock bought when the game was being dumped; when interest spikes around a new release, that stock clears and the remaining sellers price accordingly. Waiting for the sequel to make the old game cheap gets the timing exactly backwards.

So which one should you buy?

Three honest cases.

You play Ultimate Team seriously. Buy FC 27, Standard, at launch. The mode is built around a live economy and a season calendar; arriving in January means arriving to a market where everyone else has a three-month head start and the early-season content is gone. The Ultimate uplift is FC Points — that is buying currency at retail, which is the worst rate in the game.

You play Career, or kick-off with friends. Play Lite on the 25th, then wait. Career mode is the part of the game least changed year to year, and it is also the part that does not care when you arrive. FC 27 will discount; annual sports titles always do, usually first around the winter sales.

You just want a football game and do not care which year. This is the case where FC 26 still wins on cost even after the rise — but check the FC 26 page for the live figure rather than trusting a number you read anywhere, including here. Bear in mind what you are buying into: FC 26's Steam standing is Mixed, at 51% positive across more than 105,000 reviews, and its servers and Ultimate Team content calendar will now be the second priority behind FC 27's.

Three checks before you click buy

The same traps come round every September.

Check which storefront the key activates on. A cheap FC 27 key may be an EA app key, not a Steam key. They are not interchangeable, and a key bought for the wrong platform is not refundable in practice. We covered the wider version of this problem in our keyshop versus official store price study.

The bottom line

Play FC 27 Lite on the 25th, free, before spending anything. If Ultimate Team is your reason for buying, take the Standard edition of FC 27 now and skip the FC Points tiers entirely — you are paying retail for currency you can earn. If you play Career or casual matches, wait for the winter discounts. And if you were holding out for FC 26 to collapse in price now that its replacement is here, stop: it already had its cheap window in midsummer, and that window has closed.
