About Burly Men at Sea

Burly Men at Sea is a folktale about a trio of large, bearded fishermen who step away from the ordinary to seek adventure.

With gameplay halfway between a visual novel and a point-and-click adventure, the branching story carries its ungainly heroes into waters where lurk creatures from Scandinavian folklore and other misadventures. You play as storyteller and wayfinder, shaping a custom tale that begins again where it ends.

FEATURES

  • Branching Story: Play through multiple choice-driven adventures, each designed to be completed in a single sitting.
  • Innovative Controls: Shape the narrative through a unique, draggable viewport and your interactions within it.
  • Playful Aesthetic: Colorful art style with handcrafted animation, set to a whimsical original soundtrack inspired by folk music of the far north.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER

Burly Men at Sea is the second game from married duo Brain&Brain, developed during their own adventures as nomads and erstwhile farmhands.

Slow, bland and painfully repetetiv picture book, and even for the minimalistic interaction there is, the control/input style feels quite bad. Story/stories are forgettable and unimaginative, and even the art style is the same "Corporate Memphis" you already forget while you are looking at it.

i really enjoyed it! it's definitely more of a story than a game, but it has the most charming art style and it was fun to play on a summer day with a glass of iced tea. maybe not for the "serious gamers" but i had a lovely time.

Now that the game lost the ONLY redeeming quality, the print adventures, it's absolutely not worth buying. (Why not make them print-on-demand is beyond me. Ebooks just totally don't cut it.) The problem is, it's TOO repetitive. There are only 12 paths, each consisting of 4 parts. The beginning (part 1) is ALWAYS the same. The ending (part 4) is also always the same with a very minor variation. The part 2 has only 3 options, and you have to repeat each of them 4 times to get all paths. ... And there are 6 part 3 options, and you have to repeat each of them twice, too. The choice in part 3 is not a different part 4, but a different way to get to it. So the variety is really minimal. Cherry on top. No skip/fast forward. Thankfully, when you get to a part you have already seen, you get a slightly abridged version, but the keyword is, SLIGHTLY. So again, not worth buying. Get it when it's free. Devs really should consider setting a minimal price for the game itself and setting up a print-on-demand service as a main income from this game.

Burley Men at Sea is really more of a digital choose-your-own-adventure book than an adventure game, and I do like choose-your-own-adventure books. What's more the art and sound are good, it feels like a lost picture book from when you were a kid. The problem I have with BMaS is that as cute and well written and charming as it is, it's just really slow to play. I couldn't find a way to skip dialogue or fast forward through content I'd already seen which really turns it into a slog. I know the point is it's supposed to be appreciated slowly and over a long span of time, but how many time do you want to read the same paragraph and see the same giant octopus? I like to sit and play 1 game to completion at a time so this kind of thing is anathema since so much of it is just mindless clicking after you've seen it once. If you're the type of person who can keep a game installed for a looooong period of time, and every now and again you'll come back to it to try a different route then probably you'll enjoy BMaS, but for people like me (people who fast forward past the opening of Die Hard) it's hard to recommend.

This is an unexpectedly clever and cute point-and-click adventure game, simple enough a young child can get through it.
