Expeditions: Samurai

Expeditions: Samurai is such a strange departure from the other Expeditions games. With such a rich setting in history to build from, I can't understand the choice to have the player play as a group of non-Japanese characters. Worse yet, a group of characters that do not feel like they even fit the cultures they're supposed to be from, they all seem like modern cosplayers. The gameplay feels worse than Vikings, a huge step down from Rome. The art style is incredibly offputting. Samurai doesn't have the same realistic gritty vibe of Vikings or Rome, which is strange for a game set during one of the most brutal periods of Japanese history.

[h1]VERSION 0.5.2[/h1] [h2]TL;DR: If you like tactical cRPGs and don't mind early access games, I absolutely recommend [i]Expeditions: Samurai[/i].[/h2] My first playthrough of [i]Expeditions: Samurai[/i]'s early access was a treat. When it was announced, I was originally a little hesitant, as the era in Japan doesn't especially appeal to me. However, when I learned that we play as an English privateer at the dawn of the seventeenth century, with lots of Reformation drama, I was hooked, and grabbed it as soon as I could. This may be an increasingly unpopular opinion, but I've come to really enjoy early access games. Helping the developers squash bugs and seeing your suggestions implemented over time creates (for me at least) a different sort of relationship with the game and its experience. Although [i]Samurai[/i] hasn't seen its first major post-launch update yet, I have very high hopes; what we have right now is very fun, and the developers are active on the Discord. God awful story. Railroad story.

Dam it was fast. It is first negative review I have written. In first 80 minutes of the game I have encountered black female medic on a British ship. 1/3 of a crew as girls in British and Portuguese nave and female samurai. It is "netflixed" harder than AC:Japan. Until they rebuild it it is wase of money. Pretty shameful, story began to be interesting.

I've enjoyed. Story and gameplay are both fun. Primary complaint I see in other reviews is throwing shade at developers for selling the IP off...not relevant to this game's level of enjoyment. It's a different take but same basic recipe. After playing the last two entries, Vikings and Rome, I think this is a fun entry so far. hard to say too much considering the game isn't complete.

The game is good but requires significant polish. There are people who are complaining about the fact that you are not playing a Japanese characters in a game about Japan but, from my understanding as someone with limited experience in the series, every one of the installments in this series have been about people in an expedition in a foreign land. This doesn't seem like a fair criticism, though there might have been different ways to play out this setting: a Samurai expedition to the Hokkaido, a Samurai expedition to Korea, etc. there are limited ways to capture an expedition set in Japan - one of the more interesting ones being this era of cultural and religious shock and exchange. The art style is good, I quite enjoy it. One criticism I might have is that there isn't enough variety going on, this is good otherwise and one of the reasons I actually got this game and is now getting into the series. It might not be everyone's aesthetic preference, but no choice would ever have been. There's a variety of bugs and clunky controls that I think could have been optimized better.
