Times and Galaxy

(Haven't finished this game, but I'm more than halfway through it. I intend finishing the title, and will alter my review if my opinions on it change later) This gets a positive overall review because there aren't enough games about journalism out there, and this one is fairly thorough about the nuts and bolts of the profession. But good lord. Good lord, it's *boring*. If you like games like American Truck Simulator or Microsoft Flight Simulator or other games that attempt to replicate a mundane occupation without any kind of drama or excitement or intrigue, and if 'cozy' is the key quality you're seeking for a game about journalism, then... congrats, Times and Galaxy is exactly the game for you. Times and Galaxy (T&G) combines a solid, interesting model of journalism (where you must balance the interest of the public with the public interest - while staying solvent) with a delightful 2D/3D visual style and the most brain-meltingly dull assignments and stories this side of the Dorp star system. I got this game for free from a gaming magazine and it was a surprisingly adorable narrative walking simulator/visual novel. The characters are original and funny, the world building with different planets and species was creative and entertaining. Very queer friendly game also, by the way. You do have the choice to wander around the ship every single day and talk to everybody, or go straight to the writing assignment. The level of detail is astounding - click on a simple poster every day, and every day there will be a different internal dialogue about the poster. Don't forget to check out the lunch menu on the cafeteria every time, it's hilarious! On the gameplay side, there is more to do as in a typical visual novel as you walk around, altho the influence of your dialogue choices or choices you make about writing an article are mainly on achievements, but not really on the game itself. You may flirt or "date" characters, but there is no gameplay related to that. You can't do anything wrong writing an article - you can just have a better or worse reputation as a reporter. Genuinely, such an underappreciated game; not enough people have played this, and I really enjoyed my time interacting with all the fun characters! The achievement side of things was a bit of a slog, as you need to play the main story at least 3 times if you want them all because of the achievements that focus on the amount of coverage you have at the end of your internship. But that's a minor nitpick at best and doesn't affect the overall gameplay. I'd highly recommend it if anyone likes fun and wacky characters in visual novels; you will absolutely love this game.

First and foremost, I loved Times & Galaxy. There's a ton of charm in the characters and the writing, and they really managed to capture a lot of the highs and lows of daily reporting. I was really impressed by the system for crafting stories by selecting from ledes, nut grafs, quotes and more — though I found little reason to venture outside of the options that gave me the most readership and quality points. A bug halted my progression for more than a year, which was a major bummer, but I was excited to belatedly jump back in once it finally got patched. I was disappointed by the game's disjointedness — major threads like the end of the internship are built up without a conclusion, and major decisions like taking the ethical road and backstabbing Richard Gravity in a late-game story have absolutely no consequences (and wasn't even mentioned again by any character including Gravity himself). All that said, I really enjoyed my time with Times & Galaxy and would love to see more takes on this universe and format.

This is one of my favorite games. The humor and whimsy continuously delighted me. The characters, even the kind of annoying-at-times characters, were so charming, I couldn't help but fall in love with everyone. They all had such heart! The ability to write the articles with different slants was so fun and original I think. All the lore you can uncover through reading through the others' articles made the game feel immersive, like you were actually in the newsroom with colleagues. It felt like you had a lot of impact on the direction of the story and i absolutely loved that. I am a "choices matter" fiend and this game did that really well. There's so much to love here that I know I will come back to this game again and again.
