About Between Horizons – A Sci-Fi Detective Adventure

✦ AI summary

Investigate a conspiracy threatening humanity's generation ship as Chief of Security Stella in this branching sci-fi detective adventure where your evidence-gathering and moral choices directly shape the story with no reloads. Between Horizons blends investigation gameplay with meaningful consequences across a semi-open Metroidvania-style world rendered in striking 2.5D pixel art, letting you solve cases your way but living with the fallout of wrong conclusions.

ABOUT THE GAME

Between Horizons is set aboard the Zephyr, humanity's first generation ship en route to another star. You assume the role of Chief of Security Stella, who was born on the ship 24 years ago. Dive into the conspiracy behind the incident that threatens to disrupt the Zephyr's social order and foil its mission. Between Horizons is a modern 2.5D pixel art adventure that brings a branching narrative into a semi-open world. The team at DigiTales has applied numerous lessons from their first game Lacuna and proven solutions to detective game design problems to maximize player agency in the investigation process – all the while maintaining the tight pacing of a meaningful story that will ask you to reevaluate your moral compass and make increasingly tough decisions as the situation aboard the ship spirals out of control.

FEATURES

  • An Unusual Adventure: Between Horizons merges investigation gameplay with a branching sci-fi story in an ever-expanding Metroidvania-style environment.
  • Think For Yourself: The flexible evidence system lets you assign clues to cases, confront people about them, and solve any case with at any point in time. Everything you find on the ship may or may not be connected to the mystery at hand.
  • Failure is Very Much an Option: There are no second chances — submitting an incorrect solution means that consequences may follow as the story branches and ends based on your decisions.
  • Set Your Course: Underneath the game's exciting and plausible sci-fi plot lies a number of thought-provoking problems inviting you to weigh intergenerational responsibility against personal freedom.
  • A New Dimension: Timeless pixel art merges with 3D environments and modern visual effects to create a unique art style. Prefer old-school 2D? No problem, you can switch any time!

I've finished the game in 9 hours - the story had the potential to go on much longer but gameplay-wise it was perfect. I loved the concept of having the freedom to decide wether you think you've cracked a case or not. The game still continues even if you made the wrong decision. Some argued that the teleportation system doesn't make much sense - yes, you cannot teleport directly to a room, only to the nearest trainstation - but that didn't bother me too much. The whole space ship is not that huge so pretty comprehensible. If you want to play detective for a couple of hours and wanna dive into a cool story - this is your game!

It was enjoyable enough. Not super long, took me a bit over 6 hours. Some of the solutions felt like a bit of a stretch to get to or at least were finicky with the detail. $4 on sale though it was worth it.

A solid little indie story game with a few minor issues. The atmosphere and the aesthetics are great, especially seeing how the ship changes over the course of the game, it makes it feel somewhat alive. The story is pretty good, though a lot of the twists are foreseeable and very trope-driven, so as long as you don't expect your mind to be blown you'll probably enjoy this story. My biggest gripe with it is how the game fails to give you actual dilemmas through its choices. Most choices are "against the codex" or "for the codex", but there's rarely a good reason to uphold the codex other than for the sake of it (i. e. getting the relevant achievement). I'd take this as criticism towards tradition, authoritarianism or the rigidity of laws, which is a message I can get behind, but it doesn't make for an interesting game if your choices are this one-sided. The music, sound and voice acting are all rather good and while the gameplay feels like a step down from Lacuna, it's still complex enough to work as a vehicle for the story without ever making you feel stupid or overwhelmed. All in all it's an enjoyable experience!

Go play Lacuna instead. That one had a superb music and visual style. Story is good in both games. Here mix of 3d and 2d looks lazy after Lacuna. And what is up with load times between screens that has less data than games on NES, and it has to load for seconds on a system that has 16Gb? I'm leaving Yes in "Do you recommend this game" only for people to find Lacuna after this one. I hope next game won't have 200 clues in a list to scroll every time you need to talk second time to someone.
