Star Trek: Infinite

Deeply disappointing, was looking for a successor to Birth of the Federation, instead we got this unintuitive mess.

This one isn't a why is it in my library, but it was next up on the worst to best rated play order. So let's talk about Star Trek: Infinite in 2026. The game was simply a decent quality mod of Stellaris. While the base version of Stellaris it was built on was several versions old in 2023 there was still potential for this game. Nimble Giant had full access to do whatever they wanted with the game engine. So a game that was arguably worse in some ways than Star Trek mods for Stellaris still felt like there was potential for something great. The Stellaris engine can do a lot and tweaking it more and more to be Star Trek specific, not just in appearance but with some of the ways the rules work could have been awesome. What is there is still fun, I put a small number (by Stellaris standards) of hours into it, but it being abandoned by the developers is what killed it. It would still be worth like $5-$10 for what it is, but I don't like the idea of giving the devs who dropped it so quickly any support.

Star Trek: Infinite has a really good foundation and, as a Star Trek fan, there is a lot here that I genuinely like. The setting works well, the major factions are interesting, and the game has many of the ingredients needed for a great Star Trek grand strategy experience. Diplomacy, exploration, expansion, fleets, politics, and the different civilizations all fit the universe very well. The problem is that it feels like the game never got the development and support it needed. It lacks updates, additional content, balancing, and further improvements that could have turned it into something much bigger. That is probably the most frustrating part: the potential is clearly there. It already has almost everything needed to become a great game, but it feels unfinished and abandoned before that potential could really be reached. I enjoyed what is there, especially because I like the Star Trek universe, but it is difficult to fully recommend it in its current state. A good idea and a solid foundation, but unfortunately a lot of wasted potential.

Good game, had promise and had a fair bit different to justify its existance from Stellaris (e.g. no hyperlanes). Unfortunately, it has been completely abandoned except for some of the dedicated modders.

I didn't want a reskinned Stellaris, moreso since I'm not a fan of Stellaris. What I wanted was a proper successor to Birth of the Federation, which was a game I still to this day, have the most hours in. I would have accepted something akin to Sword of the Stars, Since I like that game alot too, but not this..... To me, this was a waste of money..

4/10 I've never liked grand strategy or 4x games. Total war: Empire has been the only one I've been able to get into, and this game does little to change that. As a star trek fan, at least until Jar-Jar Abrams and Kurtzman ruined it though I still like the games, I thought this game might change that. It has not. A lot of reviews call this a payed mod for another game and that it was left unfinished. I don't know about any of that and I only got it off a deep sale. I had problems just getting the game to start so that's already one strike against it. One of the biggest problem for these kind of games is they are very hard for newcomers to get into and this game is no exception. From the very start, the amount of information in the small hud that is available and the different options are overwhelming and the layout of the options and tools are very unintuitive. The "tutorial" did very little to alleviate this. Rather than having say, a separate mode for this, it just has some additional popups and mini missions that periodically pop up while playing the main game.
