About Sethian

✦ AI summary

Sethian is a sci-fi puzzle game where you decode a richly constructed alien language to uncover the fate of a vanished civilization on a distant planet. Master the unique grammar and vocabulary of Sethianese, piece together over 100 handwritten journal pages, and unlock multiple endings that reveal the deeper philosophy of this lost world.

Sethian is a sci-fi puzzle game in which you master a fictitious language. An archaeologist in the distant future, you venture to the far-flung planet of Sethian, investigating the mysterious disappearance of the people there centuries ago. An abandoned computer may have the answers you seek, but it only operates in the lost native language. Master their language, unravel their mysteries, and challenge their philosophy.

An Original Language
Unlike in other games, Sethianese is a more earnest attempt at creating a fictitious language, using its own unique grammar and vocabulary rather than simply substituting words and letters one-for-one with English. The game's language borrows elements from Chinese, American Sign Language, and other real world languages, in addition to some features which have no real world counterpart.

Over 100 Handwritten Pages
Assisting you in your investigation are your handwritten journal and dictionary, easing you into the game's bizarre language, providing you with a reliable reference, and introducing you to the literature and lore of the world.

Multiple Endings
Those who comprehend the game's language will find peace, but only those who master its world will truly see the end of Sethian.

✦ AI summary

Sethian presents an interesting concept centered on learning a constructed language through puzzle-solving, but players are sharply divided on its execution. Enthusiasts praise the cool story and engaging language mechanics, while critics complain heavily about rigid railroading, requiring extremely specific question wording rather than genuine language mastery, performance issues, and steep difficulty that feels more like guessing the developer's intended syntax than true puzzle-solving.

Really had high hopes for this, but the game stopped being fun the moment it expected specific questions in a specific order, and no freedom to ask what you want

I was on the border between whether or not I wanted to give Sethian a bad review here. It has a really cool concept and a really cool story and themes but is heavily (and I mean HEAVILY) weighed down by its structure. Most of the game is completely railroaded until close to the very end and is bogged down by the necessity for incredibly specific wording. The game isn't actually interested in mastering Sethian as a language, which is what I think a truly great version of this game would be; it just asks you to mastering the syntax for the specific questions it wants you to ask. Sadly very wasted potential.

Can't play it. Game keeps crashing minutes after I boot it up.

Steep learning curve. Horrible game design. Completely not worth this amount of money. I recommend Chants of Sennaar or Heaven's Vault if you want to play a game like this.

I honestly think it's a cozy little puzzle game, with an interesting storyline. Yes, it's a bit railroaded, but if you're looking for a story or a "campaign" then there is nothing wrong with that. For what it is, it is not bad. The other reviews are, in my opinion, mostly just people who were looking for something else in the first place. Buy this if you are bored, and interested in language-based puzzles. It will be worth the $5.

This is one of my favorite games. I’m so excited to play it again—I had to wait a few years to forget the language. This time, I’m keeping my own paper journal to accompany the digital journal in the game. I want this exact game format to learn real world languages, it’s so engaging and effective!!
