Alone in the Dark: Illumination™

A deeply flawed, yet fun game. That's all the words you need to read really. The game had so much promise but I don't know if it's the developers or publishers that simply didn't care enough, or didn't have knowledge enough to make it better. The game is functional but it often feels deeply unfair against the player with enemies appearing anywhere and everywhere -- mostly right behind you and pretty much all the time. With the main way to defeat enemies relies on using lightsources that burn out after like 45 seconds, and it makes for a frustrating experience. Your flashlight won't be enough. This isn't Alan Wake after all. Some doodads in the world lack collission like certain cars on the first stage, allowing you to just run straight through them. The FOV is pretty terrible also but it was the style at the time. And it's painful because... I truly enjoy this game. I can feel that this has the makings of potentially a great and fun game. "Illumination" could have been a really nice action game. It has a descent atmosphere with its locations, the possibility to play one of four truely different characters, and a skill system. The problem itself I had with the game is neither the graphics, which did a fair job, or the incredible low stamina when running, making me think the characters never did a run in their life before, neither the promising atmosphere with the ghost town becoming boring cave mazes afterwards, neither the endlessly spawning enemies on difficulty medium+, cornering you and killing you while you run out of ammo. It was only one thing that made me give a thimb down instead of up, and that was: bugs! I can't believe that the game was released in this state when early access wasn't a common thing back then. Barely said, most of the puzzles don't work. The first level seems to have a random setup of doors every time you start the level, with one setup making it completely impossible to reach the last cable for the generator because doors get locked around the level. One of the most boring trash games I've ever played. It's usually a lot of fun to play trash games, but this trash game can't even be considered an entertaining trash game. It seems a measure of effort went into creating this game, but bad decisions lead to trash. Your character has nonexistent stamina and extremely low walk/run speed. You face the same 2-3 enemies for almost the entire game. The controls are janky and not fun to use. The missions are boring and there are extremely dumb gameplay decisions. It's not a challenge, even on hard mode. I'd recommend this for a person who enjoys playing boring trash games. Also, don't expect anyone online in multiplayer mode. I was literally the only person online in the entirety of steam.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination ist ein Third-Person Shooter mit Horrorelementen. In Alone in the Dark: Illumination können wir entweder als "Jäger (Ted Carnby), Hexe (Celeste), Priester (Father Henry Giger) oder Techniker (Gabriella Sanders)" spielen, denn einen richtigen/festen Hauptcharakter gibt es nicht. Im Spiel geht es um die Bergarbeiterstadt Lorwich welche von einer übernatürlichen Macht, welche die restlichen Einheimischen schlich als "The Darkness" bezeichnen, geplagt wird. Außerdem wandeln jetzt mysteriöse Kreaturen durch die Stadt die die Leute umbringen. Eine einheitliche/zusammenhängende Story-Kampagne gibt es nicht. Stattdessen werden wir in einzelne, kleine Missionsbündel (Unterteilt in verschiedene Stadtgebiete) geworfen um in den Missionen stupide, repetitive und uninteressante Aufgaben zu lösen wie bspw.. einen Generator aktivieren oder bestimmte Items finden. Und das Gimmick des Spiels: Gegner können nur getötet werden, wenn si in einer Lichtquelle stehen, was aber kein großes Problem darstellt.
