Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

First playthrough review time. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is a third-person survival horror game with fixed camera angles and tank-style controls. You move through different areas, solve puzzles, and deal with enemies while managing limited resources. The game has two playable characters, each with a different path through the game. One focuses more on combat, while the other focuses more on puzzles and progression. This gives some variety in how the game plays. Items can be easy to miss, enemies can return when going back to earlier areas, and item placement is not always consistent. There are also small glitches and moments where interacting with objects does not always work properly. Overall, the game keeps the basic survival horror style with exploration, puzzles, and resource management. Well, that's exactly the problem. While pretty much everybody recognizes Shinji Mikami for what he did for the survival horror genre, Frédérick was the one who actually created it. Back in 1992. In a game called, you guessed it, Alone in the Dark. Why does nobody talk about that? Well, because of a man called Bruno. What happened was, unfortunately, a very typical misunderstanding between the creator and the company he was a part of. Frédérick's a visionary. One of those people who are able to think outside the box and create something entirely new. Those cinematic, fixed viewpoints, a certain kind of puzzles (aside from other things, AitD was the first game of its kind to include a grandfather clock puzzle), deliberately stiff movement... It was all him. And when Shinji Mikami recognized what kind of breakthrough it was... Well, CAPCOM still milks the Resident Evil franchise, doesn't it? Infogrames' CEO, Bruno Bonnell, on the other hand, didn't understand that at all. Remember that scene in The Big Ban…

Despite reviews, the game is WAY more unstable than the 2008 game. Do not buy unless you know a solid fix for all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problems.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare was an awesome experience from start to finish. If your a fan of the classic Resident Evil games , you'll definitely love this. The game has that same tense, creepy atmosphere where your constantly on edge, solving puzzle's, and trying to survive 9/10.

Took me nearly 24 years to finally come back to this game, I didn't know it was straight up on steam, I was really happy to find out... Honestly if you are even reading this chances are you know exactly what it is, and are wondering mostly about the port, which does have some slight issues, usual stuff, alt tabbing doesn't properly pause or gets you stuck in some windows, but nothing major, it didn't crash once or break for me so it's an absolute ACE recommendation for any survival horror fan. I'd get it even at full price since it's so cheap, it's more than worth it.
