Complete down grade from the original from lighting textures, even color choices and aesthetics. While making the game size almost 3 times as large. The performance is worse too but only by a bit. Their original artists must have gone on to do better things and they had to hire liberal arts interns desperate for work. They changed the story progression to get you in the Strike Suit a little sooner, but cheapened it by not having you earn it at all. It would be fine if they let you choice the textures and lighting but you can't. The 5 or 6 extra DLC missions are fine but nothing I would say you need for the complete experience. From what I am reading they down graded the game so they could put it on last gen consoles and it would actually run. Then when it didn't do that great they made it "directors cut" put it back on steam. Keep the original if you have it. Buy the original before they "sunset" it. Lament the lose of a good budget title when it's gone.

As for the game itself, it's a fun old style space shooter, with some anime mecha flying sprinkled in. Played 3 missions so far, there are challenges to unlock upgrades which is nice, gives you something to strive for in missions. Shooting mechanic is engaging and not overcomplicated yet with enough depth to be engaging. The audio did not immediately work. I had to search for a work around and then create a file on my computer to override the settings. When I finally fixed the audio and got into playing the game the first NPC started insulting me about my inability to follow her directions... when, in fact, the buttons did not do what the on screen prompts suggested they did. I went into the settings menu and found the control remapping options and found it impossible to remap my controller's sticks. Also, it seems like the D-pad did nothing, and I believe that had something to do with my difficulty getting the game to do anything I expected it to. Aside from a good soundtrack and mediocre visuals, every other aspect of my first impression of this game felt just bad and I don't want to spend the time and effort getting this game into a playable state.
