Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death

Super fun, over-the-top 3D hack-and-slash action that feels like a classic B-movie! The combat is ridiculously fast, the explosions are constant, and the talking Mayan mask adds awesome humor. The graphics are a bit dated and it's heavily inspired by older God of War games, but for a cheap, lighthearted action game, it's a hidden gem. 7.5/10

humorous, low-budget and janky action adventure, won't be for everybody. some of it is frustrating, platforming and some camera angles especially, but people complaining about sparse checkpoints are idiots, seeing as [b]you can save manually anytime, including during boss fights[/b], which needs to be a thing in every game with bosses. spectacular combos and stuff if you can pull them off, amusing dialog, and these days it's only 5 eur outside a sale and much cheaper during (started its life at 14 eur, permanent price drop half a year later). not something unmissable but it's fun enough for the few hours it takes to complete.

I don't completely hate this game, but it's a pretty weak hack and slash experience. I'd probably give it a 4/10. There are some fun moments, but there are so many issues that hurt it: - The platforming and minigame sections are AWFUL, easily the weakest part of the game. Most are one-mistake-instant-kills and are very unforgiving. It's made even worse with the awful fixed camera and unclear environments, leading to lots of deaths that feel cheap. Controls also aren't responsive in these sections. There are many of these sections scattered throughout the game, all mandatory. Very frustrating. - You will be fighting the same enemies a LOT over the course of the game. There are maybe 10 non-boss enemies in the whole game, and trust me you will feel the repetitiveness even at the short run time. The few new enemies you see near the last third all have the annoying "disappear and teleport around the arena" schtick or are such massive damage sponges that it takes the fun away. - The devs really, really, REALLY loved the "hop on a big clunky enemy, ride them, and hit the smaller enemies" gimmick, because you will do it upwards of 50 times in this game. Basically like an indie version God of War but very short game and very easy achievements with guide.

This is a hack and slash game that makes fun of the hack and slash genre so I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great time BUT the story is pretty whatever. The gameplay is very fun while being non-stop and there are some cool bosses with the final one being the only one to give me a real fight but the platforming in really really bad, mostly due to the camera which makes some areas really annoying to get through but it's like old god of war so I was kinda expecting it. 7.5/10
