DmC: Devil May Cry

I'm not a hardcore DMC fan, but I do enjoy DMC3, 4 and 5. That said... this one *had* all the makings of a good DMC game, even if different combat-wise. Problem is... you can't hardly move 3 feet or around any corner without SOME kind of cutscene. Its insane. It totally breaks up the flow in what is ultimately a game series all about combat flow and adventure. I don't know if it opens up later, but a few levels in and the map design is severely lacking and ultralinear as well. I want the old DMC1 sales pitch style of "Resident Evil but it has insanely fast action, swords, demons and angels!" not whatever this on-rails stuff is. Pretty sad. Graphically, the game aged very well and I love the over-the-top intro and attitude. It works well as an alt-history DMC1 story. But in a game about flow and style... the constant cuts and interruptions to flow is both sad and ironic

I went into this game really wanting to like it, but it has some pretty major issues. The free camera doesn't mesh well with the lack of a lock-on, and the camera will get awkwardly blocked by the environment at all times. Combined with the camera's snail-pace speed, it gets pretty unbearable. Dante's attacks and movement options had this strange static feeling, with a lack of momentum mid-air making combos and platforming feel kinda clunky. A lot of enemy gimmicks seemed cool on paper, but felt pretty bad to fight in execution. In regard to the narrative and themes, there were just as many interesting elements as there were generic ones, so there is a constant feeling of missed potential in that area. Main character's voice acting is also pretty bad, unfortunately. Music hits hard though. I don't know how much here is fixed by the special edition, but that isn't available on Steam. Just go get any of the other DMC games and you'll have a better time (except for DMC2, of course).

Beat up enemies but with style. Or play like me spamming moves and a lot of button mashing.

I'll keep it short. This game was actually pretty good! Obviously, it's so far beyond the original series, but I assume that was the point of this game. I was also surprised by how interested I was in the story; it wasn't super crazy, but I still enjoyed it. But I'll admit, it was total whiplash seeing Vergil talk like some regular dude... it really doesn't fit him. I don't really care for Dante's characterization either. It kind of comes off as too edgy in my opinion. But this game was made in 2013, so I'll let it slide. The combat is really fun as well! It's nowhere near as advanced as DMC3 or DMC4 (I haven't played DMC5 yet), but it is still very satisfying to pull off combos, especially with the two hook abilities. On the topic of new things, Dante's new Angel and Devil abilities are really fun to use. This is probably the best-controlling DMC game platforming wise. It's actually really fun using the angel wing ability as well as the grappling hooks. I would honestly love it if there were side levels based just on the platforming in this game, but that's not what this genre is about. As someone new to this series its not as bad as people say it is. It has a very unique combat system and the visual design is excellent, probably the best in the series. If you ignore the lore changes and story it's a solid game, it's just not a good dmc game.

You can make devil cry in this game.. 10/10
