It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules. Story
A tale of revenge.
In 1986, teenage jujitsu artist Ryo Hazuki returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, only to witness his murder by a Chinese man, Lan Di. Lan Di steals a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo vows to avenge his father’s death and sets out tracing Lan Di’s path.
The first game in the series, Shenmue begins the tale as Ryo travels around Yokosuka, Japan, gathering clues about his father’s murder and dealing with nefarious gangsters along the way.
The sequel Shenmue II continues Ryo’s quest, this time crossing the sea to Hong Kong, China. Ryo ventures deeper into the criminal underworld, meeting martial arts masters who aid him on his journey and offer insight into his father’s death, and unravels the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror that his father kept hidden.

I immediately saw all the things that inspired yakuza/like a dragon to be like in this game. The combat is very aged but not terrible. The amount of detail in the stores and locations is astonishing and many newer games don't get it this good. Never saw a time mechanic in a game like this which was fun to have to manage your time and to memories when the stores for example close and open when the bus comes and such. The game never crashed and it runs on a stable 30fps with no dips, would've liked it if it had like a 60 fps mode or so but the 30 fps wasn't bothering me as much as I thought it would.4 found this helpful
Shenmue 2 is my #1 🎮. Zelda's been demoted to slot #2. Shenmue wins 🏆. Is it blasphemy!?😆 I've been playing video games since I was a little kid in the 90's. One of the first things I held was a controller. I was a 5 year old girl trying to beat levels on Super Mario Brothers. I'd play all night on just 1 level until I beat it and repeat. I'm like "I'm gonna be so cool like my big brother! He's gonna be so proud!!" Fast forward about 10 years. My dad had sent me a few coins for a weekend treat and my brother (who was my guardian at the time) took me to the video store and I rented this game when it first came out. Man, I was hooked. I couldn't believe how much I fell in love with this game. It was instant chemistry for me!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ We held hands and frolicked in the park. We had picnics together and late nights under the stars. Then, I had to return the rental 😢 💔. My brother said if I did a month of hard chores he'd buy it for me and I had to keep my grades on the honor roll. I did.. I did some daily deep cleaning for 30 days. I worked so hard for that game 🎮. "Your soul is mine!" As I returned to buy it. I've played it all the way through about 4 times in my life …
Played one on Dreamcast and 2 on the OG Xbox. So glad to finally have both at once

Absolutely superb game! Loved every second of it, genuinely one of the best games I have ever played. A total masterpiece! There was never a dull moment, always something was happening, extremely exciting, comical and quirky.. the story was also great!
