Still There

There's a sort of peace in surrender. Not because everything makes sense ... but because, for the first time, it doesn't have to.

really nice (and sad) lore, good puzzles, beautiful aesthetics. If on sale this game is worth much more than the money spent

Solid narrative story. The fun of the game is picking up manuals or notes around the space station and reading them and trying to figure out the puzzles based on the instructions. Unfortunately, even though the instructions make sense in the game world some of the mechanical puzzles are very advanced for this type of story and I think there needed to be more of a ramp up for the more mechanical puzzles. They do have an easy mode as well making it fairly trivial to finish/skip. Mild spoiler example, there's a turning wheel puzzle to let coolant through a system, but there are so many path ways and switches that even though you know what do generally speaking, it will take you time to work it out. The graphics are static so you have to try and write it down in real life and slowly trace it out. Or you could just use the easy mode cheat to save time. Overall it was challenging but fun. I do recommend it BUT more casual gamers be warned!

It’s like pulling teeth. There’s gonna be a lot of words and possibly a couple of spoilers You’ve been warned. The puzzles are subpar, and not because they are too difficult or too easy, they are incongruous. Strange Horticulture has better puzzles. And don’t get me started on the “interactive” feature - you are given weird, illogical options and your choice doesn’t matter. You will arrive at the same place in the conversation (and the story), regardless. I got the impression that it is virtually impossible to understand what’s required of you unless you seek help. The manual itself is a torture device, I swear. And I have assembled multiple pieces of furniture from IKEA, including a couch. A couch, Karl! I also failed to grasp the meaning of that mini piano with one single octave. Playing music to the stars sounds poetic and intriguing until you actually do it. It's not even fun. It's stressful and annoying. This game is not adventurous, nor is it thought inducing. It is, however, emotional. An odd duck of a game. Love the concept and the presentation (the fully interactable command console and keyboard was a nice surprise). The Puzzles can lean on the frustrating side and it feels like an oversight that you can't pin the in-game technical manual while trying to resolve them, instead having to click through the menu. I liked the humour for the most part (although I can see why others found it grating) but was left wanting more from the story come the end. It tries a lot, touching on grief, betrayal, redemption, and death while also piling sci-fi twists and turns on top. Could perhaps have been pared back for a better whole, but still decent. I enjoyed my time with [i]Still There[/i] overall, and believe its worth trying if you are into story-focused games or are interested by the premise, especially with its short length and low price.
