EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 WINGDIVER THE SHOOTER

i love EDF as much as the next guy but this is not a great game and its extremely short. i've played demos that had more content

After finally spending some serious time with the game I definitely came away from it with a positive overall impression. It is not without its issues of course. As is the case with certain shooters with 3D graphics, the bullets / player are pretty chunky and it is very easy to take several hits in succession. You can adjust to this a bit with time and the game gives you some tools to deal with this as well. Most notably in the form of a boost-dash feature that allows you a few I-frames upon activation. After playing through level 1 on Normal, I decided to switch over to Easy for the remainder of my initial play through in order just to enjoy the ride smoothly with minimal interruptions. This was the right call as the Easy difficulty is rather forgiving with how it deals out damage but still gives the player some semblance of challenge with the same patterns as normal. Anyways, the game also has a very forgiving checkpoint system as well so pretty much anyone should be able ti find a way through the 6 stages on one of the difficulties. Boring. Dont understand if I hit anything or not or where I am from the ground up. I want my money back

Do you like EDF? Do you like Shootemups? Do you like the challenge of playing the same levels over and over again? If you answered "Yes" to all three questions, get this game. I have played it 3 hours, the first 1.5 hours was beating the game on my first run. The remaining has been playing the game on harder difficulties, unlocking a couple new weapons, and trying to keep making my way up the ranks. I didn't get very far but shootemups aren't my best genre. It's nice they incorporate the EDF formula, you gain armor so you can take more hits even if you lose the mission. You won't gain weapons though unless you complete the mission. Weapons will become better and better by beating missions on harder difficulties, and missions later in the game. There are only 6 basic missions, not much content beyond that unless you are really good at this game. Wing Diver The Shooter is a great game to buy on sale that will bring a short but decent level of entertainment. This is my favorite game series and I can't recommend it enough. Basically a shoot em up game based on EDF 4.1. The story takes place during the events of EDF 4.1 from a different perspective. Still has that charming 4.1 voice acting and I love it for that. As for the game its incredibly short but also quite a hard one. The game is only 6 levels long but I was punished thinking I could play through it on normal difficulty without any unlocks. Game is fun. Pretty good shmup but definitely not worth the price tag. Only pick up when its around 80 or 90% off I'd say.

Watch for a sale, for sure. But this EDF spin-off is a fun time for fans of the series, once you begin unlocking powerful weapons. I don't recommend it if you're looking for specifically a Cave-style shmup, as there are far better entries in that genre available on Steam. This is more like a lightweight version of an EDF game, minus the other character classes besides Wing Diver. It's not a very long game, even to collect all the weapons, so it can be a good way to revisit EDF if you don't feel ready to start playing another main series installment.
