Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Remastered

I'll be honest, I had low expectations for Total Eclipse going into it. I didn't enjoy Alternative; Unlimited: The Day After was neat, but I only enjoyed Episodes 0 & 3; and the prequel side-story for Total Eclipse, Imperial Capital Burns, was a massive slog despite having some neat concepts. If it wasn't for Total Eclipse being included in the Muv-Luv humble bundle I bought back in 2024, I honestly wouldn't have read it; in fact I was fully expecting to drop Total Eclipse within ten hours of reading before I even started it. I wouldn't have read the spin-offs if I didn't desperately want to justify the nearly 100 hours I’ve spent reading the trilogy, and later another 100 hours of reading the spin-offs. ...So imagine my absolute shock when Total Eclipse had me deeply invested, when Total Eclipse had me reading entire arcs within a single day (the arcs usually being four to six hours long), when Total Eclipse had me getting up at six in the morning twice out of excitement to keep reading it, when Total Eclipse made me so emotional I cried multiple times, and when Total Eclipse became one of my favourite visual novels I've ever read. ...So imagine my absolute shock when Total Ecl…

While it doesn't quite hit the same emotional highs as Muv-Luv Alternative, Total Eclipse is still a great visual novel with a good setting, interesting characters, and compelling drama. I will say that the pacing suffers a bit, and there's a bit too much military technical jargon, but the strong characterization kept me interested even when there wasn't much going on plot-wise. On the plus side, the excessive fanservice of previous entries is significantly toned down here (though it's not gone entirely). That was always an aspect of this series that bothered me, so I'm glad Total Eclipse has a stronger emphasis on characters and worldbuilding instead. I wouldn't quite say it's as good as Alternative, but at the very least you can jump in without having to play a crappy dating sim first.

This might be a controversial take but I actually like Eclipse better than Alternative. Not because the story is better, although its good, but mainly because it does a way better job at balancing the dialogue to action ratio, something I felt Alternative missed the mark on. If Alternative is 70/30 then Eclipse is 60/40; which allows you to see mechs and operations more often. Not only does it help break up dialogue heavy parts, but it allows a core part of the series, mechs/beta/military operations, to shine. Lastly, my only critique would be the love interest in this game, which you'll know once you get toward the end, I think they could done a better job at showing the gradual progress of the relationship because it kinda comes out of left field/way too early. Like you see where it was headed but there just wasn't enough build up to really sell it. Some later dialogue tries to help clarify why they each other and it works, but it happens like 1-2h later which by then its too late. Overall a solid modern release of the muv luv series.
