Introduction
Pun-filled and bittersweet as it is, the title alone reminded me of “Ed, Edd n Eddy”. That’s an animated series from over twenty years ago, so chances are you might not even be familiar with it. Either way “jawbreakers” are a type of candy which were part of my own childhood as well, so several events from this visual novel struck home more than I’d like to admit. It also prevented me from getting bored with its otherwise predictable plot and one-dimensional characters. This is the development debut of CatComb, while the project’s being published by industry veterans Reef Entertainment. Yes, the team behind the recently succesful video game adaptation within the Terminator universe (and less stellar Rambo tie-in), is also supporting the release of a very kid-friendly visual novel that’s as far from violence as Skynet’s from “World peace”.
Story
Humor swooped in to save the day. Don’t expect satire or social commentary though. It’s the innocent kind which at least allows actual children to enjoy Jaw Breakers & The Confection Connection without any concern for inappropriate content. Jaw Breakers & The Confection Connection is a beautifully crafted visual novel by CatComb Studios. All the colourful and pretty character sprites and backgrounds are drawn by hand, and it features a really cool and diverse Soundtrack by Composer Kevin Macleod. The piano piece used when visiting Crow Manor is truly beautiful, and I can't get it out of my head. I picked up Jaw Breakers because it's in Reef's steam catalogue, and I'm a big fan of Reef and currently covering all of their titles in-between other publishers I have a care for. I researched CatComb Studios who are behind the project but was unable to find literally anything other than on CatComb's website they mention a staff member called Will, Who could possibly be Will Curley of Reef Entertainment. Furthermore, I also had a lot of search results about Youth Development programs but was unable to find anything when scanning over the blogs. It has made me wonder if Will is possibly involved in some kind of program for Youth Developers and that's where the link and publishing by Reef comes from, The game is sold for less than £1. I was Also able to trace the titles Artist, Julia Fantoni to a “Thank You” Credit on Terminato…
Nice quick game. Art is pretty good. Story is interesting enough for the session. Writing is a bit... mature... for what I assumed the target audience would be. Not that it has anything graphic, but rather it feels like it would be more comfortable for players who are a little older than who I'd imagine the target audience to be. It could definitely benefit from Voice Overs, but the current price, although attractive, would not support that imo. Also, it is done in a Visual Novel style, but I'm not sure it was really necessary. Every time I tried to go to another location than what the story asked me to, it just said that there was nothing to do there and pointed me in another direction. Although it would have been fun to go to the other places and see something, I think this story doesn't really need it. So for all intents, this story is pretty straightforward even though it has the Visual Novel play style. Overall, still a nicely put together game. If you're playing with your kids, it might be beneficial to sit and read with them, or let them play it when they are little older although it might not hold their interest as strongly as one might expect for a game that aimed at…
