About We are Eva

Are you reading this? Hi! My name is Eva. I'm the main protagonist of the game you're looking at. Yes, this little platformer game is about me... About me AND dimensional travel! Do you want to know more?

Okay, well... I am a (mostly) peaceful creature living between different worlds. Sleeping is usually all I do, but right now, something evil is happening to said worlds, and I want it to stop. That's where I need you, for your ability to see in 2D... There's no time to explain!!!1

DIMENSIONAL TRAVEL

Play the game in multiple dimensions simultaneously, traveling through them at will!

NOT JUST DECORATIONS

All worlds are truly different! One might not let you breathe, while the other will allow you to fly!..

DYNAMIC LEVELS

Each level changes whenever you fail! Say "yes!" to an ever-fresh experience!

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Make your way! And if it doesn't work, make another one.

YOUR CHARISMATIC COMPANION

The best playable character in the history of gaming (according to herself) will never leave you alone! EVER. (guys, we should rewrite this - it sounds like a threat)

I didn't dislike the idea of the protagonist speaking with me as I played through a platformer, but a mechanic like changing dimensions can be hard to implement well. Having tried several indie titles, I've found the genre isn't as easily mastered and created as it looks. None of the negative reviews I read touched upon an issue that's not obvious from the description or trailer, and that's the core mechanics.
Gameplay
I think like most gamers, I don't object to a challenge, or the occasional shift in how one or two levels play out of the entire experience. However, when it comes to the overall game, there's certain aspects we really don't want being screwed around with as we're playing. A few examples from WE include rev…

I don't think I'm going to replay this game. If a charming, but frequently frustrating puzzle platformer sounds like something you'll only play once, get it at a discount. At the time of this review it's on sale for two bucks, which is a steal for just about anything.

A very challenging platformer game, in which you need to switch between dimensions for completing levels (a bit similar to the Steam-game "In-Vert"). You are able to jump, double-jump, hold on walls and switch between dimensions during the game. Every time you die in this game, the level itself will change a bit. I really like the protagonist's cheeky and charming attitude at the same time. She's even going to greet you (the gamer) directly as soon as you return back to a game. The developer themself is helping out fast, if their customer's are in need for help, which is unfortunately rare in Steam and therefore worth mentioning extra in a positive review. And for Linux users I suggest to use "Proton 9.0-4 ", because that emulator worked perfectly fine for myself.

We are Eva is an inventive 2D precision platformer that builds its identity around traveling between dimensions rather than relying exclusively on traditional jumping challenges. Developed and published by Totally Normal Creature, it follows Eva, a strange and energetic creature whose existence spans multiple worlds. When those worlds come under threat, she becomes the unlikely hero responsible for dealing with the problem. The story provides enough context to motivate the adventure without overshadowing the gameplay, while Eva's self-aware personality adds humor and a playful sense that she knows perfectly well that she is starring in a video game. Dimension switching is the mechanic that separates the experience from a conventional precision platformer. Eva can move between different versions of reality, and each dimension can introduce its own environmental properties and gameplay rules. One world might allow an ability that another restricts, while hazards that make one route impossible can potentially be bypassed by changing dimensions at the correct moment. Some dimensions can even fundamentally alter Eva's circumstances, including whether she can breathe or fly. The result …
