About Wings of Vi

✦ AI summary

Battle your way through skill-based 2D platforming challenges and epic boss fights as the angel Vi in this retro-inspired adventure that strips away cheap difficulty in favor of pure mechanical challenge. With multiple difficulty levels, online leaderboards, and a wealth of secrets and cosmetics to unlock, Wings of Vi delivers hardcore platformer thrills that welcome players of all skill levels.

Wings of Vi is a challenging 2D platformer in which you play as the angel Vi, tasked with defeating the Demon Lord Jeh’oul after he is freed from captivity. Throughout her journey she must traverse dangerous worlds and fight countless hellspawn in order to discover where Jeh’Oul lurks and save the world from his demonic clutch.

The game takes inspiration from "Megaman", "Cave Story", and "Castlevania", along with a host of masochistic retro platformers, while cutting out the arbitrary difficulty of hidden traps and pixel-perfect jumps in favor of skill based gameplay. The game aims to capture the attention of the same core group of players as its spiritual precursor, "I Wanna be the Boshy", including the hardcore-platformer lovers and the speedrunning community, all while appealing to a broader audience through a variety of difficulty levels and modifiers.

I feel a little bad giving this a do not recommend. There's a fairly decent game in Wings of Vi, but I don't know if I can genuinely call it fun. Wings of Vi is brutally difficult, and it wears it on its sleeve. For the most part, I wouldn't call it unfair in its difficulty, but there are a few spots that either through some heavy RNG, too many things on screen at once, or just a very long auto scroller stretch without a checkpoint, end up tipping the difficulty scale out of "challenging" into frustrating. If you're someone who likes memorizing every single attack a boss can do and the minor tells for those attacks, and you have a huge amount of patience, I think I can recommend Wings of Vi for you. If you're not, it's going to end up more frustrating than fun. I would like to shoutout both the music and the art, they're excellent.

This is a great game for it's time, but do not be mistaken - It has aged poorly in terms of quality of life features and it has plenty of bugs that detract from the games overall great vibe. That being said, do not worry about feeling frustrated about the platforming, as once you solve most puzzles and timings, they are straightforward. But the paired with inconsistent respawning and often respawns into clips walls and moving platforms.. well it becomes a exercise in if the game will function properly. That aside, I do however, look forward to part 2 as there is plenty to improve upon and even more so to be excited for.

It's an IWBTG-like, and it's not crazy good, but it's alright. That being said, they lost me when they gave me an object to "teleport to the past". I went to some earlier path that I hadn't explored. Went through an entire level only to find out at the end that I can't proceed because it's the past. I'm 100% mad. Ok, fine. I swallowed my anger and went back in.

If looking for precision difficulty this is a decent platformer, last i knew could get locked n need to start another save if choosing a wrong direction late game but the atmosphere n precision make up for it.
