Flesh Made Fear

I can easily recognize that this game comes from a place of love for the prior survival horror classics of the past. However, I feel that the execution leaves much to be desired. I wouldn't exactly call it a horrible experience, but there a number of aspects that really hurt it when compared to similar games in the same genre and price range. Gameplay- An emulation of a classic tank controls survival horror experience. The tension of managing resources as you traverse different areas and accompanying threats is unfortunately cut short by the often very large areas this game provides. The amount of walking from point to point with no real necessary engagement with combat was most of my first hour of gameplay. Games like these often put the player in close proximity to threats in mainly indoor or otherwise cramped locations to avoid this issue. Getting past enemies and saving as many resources you can is part of the puzzle box design survival horror games are known for. When I was forced to be close to enemies it would often be with a dozen or more in a single narrow pathway. A nice call back to the resident evil games of the past, it keeps up its atmosphere the entire run and really makes you feel the gravity of what has occurred to the town. I like the game, I don't think it's perfect but for $20 bucks I think it is more than fair. I was a little surprised the game felt a bit short. Some areas I felt pretty empty were the Movie rental store and the movie theater. Considering how well done the police station was, those two areas felt lack luster. Especially the Theater considering why you need to go in there. The enemies are pretty creepy, but not alot of diversity though, Really only a handful of unique enemy types that aren't all that interesting once you seem them the first time. But the game is still fun to explore and discover items and details into what happened to the people and the town. While I can't go into detail the ending was a bit....of a let down....I was more thinking..."Oh that's it, it end right here just like that..." And even with the best ending it ends on a note im not a fan of. But getting to that point kept me going wanting to know more just missed the landing at the end for me. I had a lot of fun playing FMF. I think it captured the spirit (and some similar mechanics) of the OG Resident Evil. The tank like controls and fixed camera positions did take getting used to, the inventory management is sometimes inconvenient, and the maps weren't as helpful as you'd think since the game is pretty linear. But, I found these charming as it's how old games used to be, which I think that was the point. It didn't need to be modernized. It shows the team had a lot of fun and passion into making Flesh Made Fear, especially the voice actor for the antagonist. Superb job. I listened to the recordings a few times because of how good and fun the character was. The PS1 aesthetic was oddly refreshing and admittedly nostalgic (I know it's almost a trope these days but it works). It was gritty, grotesque with all the gore, eerie and did keep me on my toes with a few light scares. FMF is simple and fun, not much more I can ask for.

I have returned to edit my review after completing the game. This game, is amazing. If you are a fan of classic survival horror from the PS1 era, do yourself a favor and sit down to enjoy this masterpiece. Graphics, sound design, voice acting, story and nostalgia for those old RE style games is all on point. The VA for Dr Ripper in particular is absolutely nailing it, I'm just waiting for the next Ripper tape so I can hear more of his story. The nods to classic survival horror games and to other creators in the online horror space are great. I've been having a wonderful time collecting all the plushies and I look forward to seeing them all in the Ripper Room once I'm done. In my initial review I had complaints about the boss fights being overly long and consuming too much ammunition, but I have since learned that it's very important to use the knife during their stun animations. I think the knife may actually do nearly the most damage in the game and it significantly cuts down on both the length and the resource cost of boss fights. Once I figured this out my only complaint was sorted out and I had an amazing time finishing the game.
