Cold Fear™

An pleasant surprise, I was lucky to buy this hidden PS2 gem before it was as delisted. At first it reminded me of Resident Evil Revelations 1 which also takes place on a ship too, but this game is waaaay better. The bad things are that u can't change the resolution or the game simply wont open anymore, cant minimize the game without breaking the engine, level design is a bit confusing and the final boss is horrible. Cant save the game when the player want, cant change any settings on the options when on gameplay, only in menu. Aside from that, i didn't have any other issues. Great game, unfortunately it will never have sequel or a remake.

I'm fully aware this game has been delisted from Steam, but anyone interested in playing it can still pick it up on GOG. Many people compare Cold Fear to Resident Evil 4 and while the similarities are certainly there, Cold Fear has plenty of ideas that make it stand on its own. The biggest highlight is the environment itself. You'll often fight aboard a ship constantly rocked by violent waves, forcing you to adjust your aim while trying not to slide across the deck or crash into obstacles that can damage you. The game also features destructible objects that can be used to your advantage during combat, making encounters feel more dynamic. Unlike Resident Evil 4, you can move while aiming. Exploration uses tank controls, but combat switches to a more modern third-person perspective. It might feel unusual at first, but it works surprisingly well. Speaking of aiming, the PC version lets you aim with the mouse. That may not sound impressive today, but back in 2005 it certainly was. For comparison, the original PC release of Resident Evil 4 had players aiming and moving the camera with the arrow keys. One thing to keep in mind is that the game doesn't include a map. Used to watch my dad play it years back, now i got myself to play it, its amazing game with fantastic atmosphere, just u on abandoned ship in the eye of the storm and a ton of unfriendly monsters. The weather effects and the movements of the whole ship are just astonishing for its time. Such a gem from the peak gaming era where games use to be creative and have a soul. <3

Works suspiciously well on modern hardware/Windows 11 but doesn't support resolutions higher than 1600x1200 without some slight tweaks

This game was a solid B, and it would have sold much better...if it wasn't released two months after the original Resident Evil 4. It does have it's moments, and it's share of references to other media...overall it was enjoyable. It was basically The Thing, on a boat/tanker. A remake would be welcomed.

It was a very good game.
