✦ AI summary

Orion 13 has an intriguing sci-fi atmosphere and world-building that draws players in, but the core combat mechanics are consistently criticized as unresponsive, floaty, and overly simplistic, with issues like unresponsive player models, poor collision detection, and limited strategic depth that undermine the experience. While some players enjoy the physical challenge and find it fun despite its flaws, most agree the game is only worth considering on a deep sale, with additional frustrations including control layout problems for left-handed players, glitchy level design, and a general lack of

As a robot soldier, you move up the ranks by successfully carrying out difficult missions throughout millenniums, and you have become one of the three highest-ranked officers in the army. Commander Ryder has ordered you to check-in for a general diagnostic at the medical bay, which you have managed to avoid for yonks. This visit was because you had a recollection of being a human in your youth on the beautiful planet named Orion 13, just like your name. That can’t be a coincidence, and you need to find a way to escape this dystopian society. But it won’t be easy; Commander Ryder has his troops onto you, and you’ll have to fight to reach the planet Orion 13! Orion 13 is a swordplay/action-adventure VR game developed and self-published by Metro VR Studios on the 14th of February 2020 on the Steam platform. I played this game with the HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite. The game consists of a Story mode, which you can play on either on the…

I love the world and atmosphere, but the combat is outright non-functional. The player model is unresponsive to the player, and you'll be recalibrating yourself every 5 seconds, along with many other frustrations that come with the body system this game employs. Enemy models jerk between animations seemingly at random as they slide towards you and melt away your health with no visual feedback whatsoever. Blocking is useless, so combat remains centred around rushing your opponent and waggling your sword at them until either you or them fall down. To address this, the developer has added the stun, heath steal, and double damage mechanics, the first two being beams that you shoot out of your left controller for their respective effects and the latter slowing dow ntime and increasing melee damage. These are awkward bandaids over the fundamentally unfinished gameplay mechanics that only highlight the problems in how the game is put together. I really wanted to like this game. The world is so weird and interesting and vr enhances this immersion greatly, but unfortunately, it just isn't good to play. I got this game on sale for about $3 CAD so I can't bring myself to harp on it too much…

There is no way to use weapons in your left hand as far as I can tell. Combat is also a little 'floaty' i.e weapons just sorta phase through enemies instead of colliding like most melee-focused VR games. Can't really fault it for $4 but I'm left-handed so I'm unable to play the game properly. That said, the aesthetic was pretty cool and there are killable passive NPCs which you almost never see in VR games. Voice acting was a bit funny but I suppose it holds a certain charm.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/G9AF0s1fS3g While I am giving this a positive recommendation on Steam, I'm not saying this is a good game at all. I really don't like Steam's up and down only system, especially for a flawed game like this. Consider this a buy on deep, deep sale only recommendation. Although, I do think overall I had more fun than frustration during my time with this game, the truth of the matter is that my first impression was that this game is horrible. That is because the combat mechanic, the main focus of the game, is absolutely terrible. There's no getting around that one. The combat is too simple and basic. You can just flail away aimlessly and there really is no strategy or depth involved. The bad news doesn't end there for this game. It's also a bit buggy and lacks overall polish. This feels like an Early Access game. So why am I still voting yes on Steam's recommendation system? As mentioned, overall, I had more fun than not. There's a very well crafted world here filled with very immersive backdrops that can only be accomplished in VR. The story is also not bad …

This game is a blast to play so far really enjoying it. You can get a real workout playing this game as you slash your way through enemies. The AI definitely is not to be underestimated and will wreck you if you're not careful. Arena mode is a good time as you battle waves of enemies. I've put 5 hours into this game so far and still am not bored. If you like a challenge be sure to purchase this game.

I'm playing on an Oculus Quest 2 with a GTX1060. The stellar opening (credits with story background) really had my hopes high, but then the cut scenes started, and the actual game play... they just lack the same polish. Controls seem clunky, and this doesn't feel optimized for Touch controllers (the sword and ranged attacks stick out at weird angles, like a lot of Vive games ported to the Oculus). Glitching through the floor to your death is not uncommon, and then you reload only to immediately die the same way. Combat is a lot of thrashing, and be ready to use your sword, special abilities, and inventory items all at the same time.
