Roar of Revenge, developed and published by SEEP, is a retro-inspired action-platformer that embraces the design sensibilities of classic side-scrolling adventures, offering a straightforward but engaging experience rooted in simplicity and familiarity. It places players in the role of Keel the Barbarian, who sets out on a quest to confront a powerful lion-like enemy threatening his world. The narrative is intentionally minimal, serving primarily as a framework to connect the levels and motivate progression rather than as a central element of the experience. The gameplay is built around traditional platforming and melee combat, with players navigating through a series of stages filled with enemies, traps, and environmental hazards. Movement is responsive and easy to understand, allowing players to jump, attack, and traverse obstacles with precision. Early on, the character’s abilities are limited, but as the game progresses, new skills and enhancements are gradually introduced. This steady expansion of the moveset provides a sense of growth, making later encounters feel more dynamic without overwhelming the player with complexity. Level design plays a significant role in maintain…

Been a long time since I played a new game for 3.2 hours straight. This is a thing of fiendish, infernal beauty. Can't wait to come back to some more of it. Looks the part, plays the part. If this was on the NES, it would have been legendary

Great 8-bit nostalgia. If I'd been able to play this on my old Apple ][ I'd be a very happy boy. Sadly I couldn't get it to run on my Steam Deck or Steam Machine, despite trying multiple configurations and Proton compatibility settings. I can still run it on my PC, but not the same. It just freezes at the startup page.

Yet another faithful NES adventure platformer by SEEP. And a very well-made one at that. Not a pushover by any means, but always fair - which wasn´t always the case with games back then : ) I especially appreciate the lack of a timer and not hiding items in walls. Gotta love that! Even the slightly rough translation feels 100% NES authentic and adds to the charm. Those guys know exactly how to make good retro games : )

While presented as a cross between Rastan and Faxanadu, there are no RPG elements like the latter; it's a linear game and the inspiration is mostly visual (the character when climbing ladders looks very similar). The whole game looks, sounds, and feels like a title from the later years of the NES, and does it very convincingly, even if I recognized some sprites from the first Swords & Bones, adequately recolored. I'm usually not crazy about CRT filters, but the one used here is pretty good. In a most bizarre choice, the game opens with the heroic barbarian apparently so out of shape, the first of the four relics that will make him able to vanquish evil makes him capable of jumping to begin with! After the initial perplexity, however, playing for a while without a mechanic we take for granted turned out fun, and the level is short enough for the gimmick to not overstay its welcome. The whole quest offers a good variety of backgrounds, enemies, and even situations like underwater levels - although one of them is the most annoying, looking for half a dozen gems between dead ends and instant-death spikes - and even a shmup level clearly homaging Dragon Spirit[/…
