Dragon Climax

Not great by any metric, but I expected much worse, as I had noticed this game clearly uses the same engine as [b]SEEP Universe[/b] and even recycles some graphics from there. But it looks like the developers already strived to improve upon their previous work. The graphics, while still quite amateurish, have a more consistent look throughout the game. Character portraits are of a much higher quality as they are made by artist Oscar Celestini; can't get over how ridiculous Kasuga's proportions are, though. Controls are thankfully much less slippery; platforming is far from exceptional but miles better than in [b]SU[/b]. Biggest issue is still the ridiculously short reach of punches and kicks: you may stand right in front of an enemy and yet not be close enough for the attack to connect! The better handling makes this more tolerable but can't change that the levels featuring Shinya the karateka are less fun to play than the ones with Kasuga the kunoichi, a character who attacks from long range and can run. This game tries to be a mishmash of a platformer and beat em up and unfortunately just fails at both. Some of the art is cool in a retro way but the gameplay itself is too simple and oftentimes constipated that you never get a sense of a groove or momentum in the stages. The jumping feels floaty and imprecise and the hitboxes for a lot of enemies are extremely awkward, seeming like I have to be RIGHT ON TOP of enemies to punch them. The game features a lot of cheap design choices and traps that are a pain and kill the flow of the stages, it all feels like a test to frustrate the player rather than being any fun. The combat is far too simplistic to be enjoyable and the bosses feel poorly thought out. Got to stage 6 and am so tired of dying over and over to cheaply placed traps, there appears to be a little passion put into the game but the designer really doesn't have the development wherewithal to make an engaging and fair experience without it being cheap repetitious and grindy. Can't recommend, more annoying than entertaining too many of these games think "old school" means to make the game cheap and difficult as possible and I don't see the appeal, there's a reason we left bad …

I REALLY TRIED TO LIKE THIS GAME...The Game runs ok until mission 6 were the enemies are broken, they glitch a lot and you become a magnet to them, it becomes super difficult to beat the mission, I tried for over an hour but got stuck there, and what was fun at first became very frustrating and upsetting.

Dragon Climax is a compact retro action game that deliberately channels the spirit of old arcade martial arts adventures while adding enough progression and variety to distinguish itself from a straightforward imitation. Developed and published by SEEP, it combines side-scrolling combat, platforming, ninja action, boss battles, and light RPG mechanics. Its inspirations are easy to recognize, particularly games such as Kung-Fu Master, Vigilante, and Shinobi, but the experience builds its own identity around two playable siblings whose contrasting fighting styles keep the campaign from becoming entirely repetitive. The story takes place in a troubled version of America where prolonged economic instability has allowed crime to overwhelm North Town. Karate master Tamotsu Iwata establishes a dojo to teach ordinary people how to defend themselves, eventually passing his martial traditions to his family. The central conflict involves his children Shinya, Kasuga, and Aiko. Family tradition prevents Kasuga from learning the secret techniques reserved for men, causing resentment and eventually leading her toward ninjitsu instead. First, Left Click > Options >controller >Disable Steam Input to get your controller to work. Anyway, for like 4 bucks this game is... sorta okay. It's not a diamond in the rough or anything, but it is what it sets out to be. That said, it's not even really worth it. Most of the content of the game is side content that is just there to make buying upgrades and sticker packs easier. If not for the side stuff, it would be even shorter, and the game is short as it is. The side content is padding. Customization is a farce, instead of just giving you proper RGB sliders, they have predefined color choices to select from. That's boring and lame. Not being able to just pick who you want to play as is lame, all in service of a story that is even more watered down than Double Dragon, Final Fight, River City Ransom and every other game it's trying to emulate. You can get a few hours out of it, but that's kind of it, if even that. There's little reason to replay things outside of practice for hardcore mode, because the side content simply offers a better cash and EXP pay out for shorter playing time than farming the stages over and over. Another goodie for a light evening of gnastalgic gameplay! I also love the room to grind a little bit to keep the edge over the enemies if it's proving more challenging than you want LOL
